    • 619,464. Delivering measured quantities of liquids. IMPROVED DESIGNS, Ltd., READ, N. K., and READ, H. L. Dec. 12, 1946, No. 36668. [Class 106(v)] Apparatus for delivering measured volumes of liquid comprises a measuring chamber, valve means for the supply and discharge of liquid, mechanism to control the said valve means while allowing of sufficient time for filling and emptying the chamber, means for setting in motion the said mechanism which then functicns automatically for the remainder of the cycle of operations and governor means for controlling the rate of operation of the mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1, depression of a plunger 22 causes cam 38 to disengage pawl 36 from ratchet wheel 35 mounted on a spindle 34 which then rotates under the force of a clock spring (not shown), mounted on spindle 30 and driving the spindle 34 through gears 32, 33. Rotation of spindle 34 turns a cam disc 39 causing a lever 42 to pivot so that its locking lug 43 engages a recess 45 in the plunger and holds the latter depressed. The spindle 34 drives a centrifugal governor 48 through a gear train 47 and also drives the pin wheel 49 of a Geneva mechanism (Fig. 4), spur wheels 54 being connected one to the inlet valve 15 and the other to the discharge valve 16 of the measuring chamber. During one complete revolution of the pin-wheel 49 the discharge plug valve 16 is turned to close and the inlet plug valve turned to open, a pause then occurs during which the measuring chamber fills, valve 15 is then closed and valve 16 opened and finally a further pause is allowed whilst the measuring chamber empties. The spindle 34 having then completed one revolution, the dwell on the cam disc 39 again registers with the end of the lever 42 which pivots away from the plunger 22, releasing the latter which returns to its original position and allows the pawl 36 to re-engage the ratchet wheel 35, thus stopping the mechanism. The capacity of the measuring chamber may be varied by insertion within the glass cover (not shown) of spacing rings, blocks, etc. Depression of the spindle 22 and consequent rotation of the spindle 30 winds the clock spring at the commencement of each cycle of operations. In a modification, the apparatus may be arranged to empty the measuring chamber on initial operation of the spindle 22, the chamber then refilling ready for subsequent use.

    • 592,013. Garment hangers. READ, H. L., and READ, N. K. Jan. 25, 1945, Nos. 1984 and 30135. [Class 52 (v)] A garment hanger comprises a coat hanger element 11 to which are connected additional hanger elements 29, 26 which are movable from a storage position close to the coat hanger to an operative position shown in Fig. 1 in which trousers, waistcoat and jacket are presented in the order in which they are required for dressing. The element 11 is provided with an attachment hook 12 and a parallel motion linkage comprising pivotally mounted brackets 20, 23 with arms 22, 24 supported in the extended position by stops 21 and on which the elements 29, 26 are pivotally mounted. In modifications the waistcoat and trouser elements are welded together and are mounted on a bracket pivotally attached to the coat hanger or are supported by a lazy tongs linkage mounted on the coat hanger. Alternatively a pivotally mounted arm with holes for the insertion of the additional members may be arranged to swing down in front of the coat hanger.

    • 469,705. Extendible scaffold beams. DELL, C., and READ, H. L. Sept. 17, 1936, No. 25333. [Class 20 (ii)] An extendible beam for use as a scaffold, shuttering support, or as shuttering, comprises a main portion 3 having undercut ends 8 and an end portion or portions 1 loosely adjustable with respect to the main portion and capable of being held rigidly to the main portion after adjustment. The end portion is provided with a shaped end or ends 5 to engage the flange of a supporting bar, and is adjusted relatively to the main bar 3 by a lever 12 pivoted at 13 between the flanges of the main bar and having a pin 14 to engage a rack 10 on the edge of the web of the adjustable end portion. After adjustment, wedging pressure between the parts is effected by a lever 2 having a curved end 4 which presses the portions together. In a modification, Fig. 5, the locking and adjustment are effected by a single lever 2, and a pawl 21 and ratchet 18 are provided to prevent accidental unlocking of the locking lever. A removable handle 15 is provided to operate the lever and to press the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet or release may be effected by hand lifting the lever 19 carrying the pawl. The end portions may be provided with wedge ends so that they may be jammed between opposed surfaces.

    • 467,488. Screw propellers. DELL, C., and READ, H. L. Sept. 17, 1935, Nos. 25798/35 and 12174/36. [Class 114] In screw propellers of the kind in which the hub is mounted for limited relative rotation and axial sliding on the draft for varying the pitch under varying thrust and torque, the hub assembly connecting the blades to the shaft provide that increases in thrust and /or torque reduce the pitch angle whilst decreases result in increased pitch. The boss 1 is mounted with limited relative rotation on a sleeve 3 which is splined to and has a limited sliding motion on the propeller shaft. The boss is also connected to the shaft by cam slots 6 engaging rollers 5 on studs 4 on the shaft. The sleeve 3 is formed with a bevel wheel 7 meshing with bevels 8 on the roots 9 of the blade. Sliding motion of the sleeve 3 is restrained by springs 12 and by liquid pressure acting on pistons 10. Pressure fluid under the control of the pilot is admitted by a central duct 13 past the valve 13 to the inlets 18. With a constant pilot valve setting the pressure depends upon the engine speed. The valve 15 may be omitted. In a modification, the pistons 10 act only as dashpots or may be omitted. A single annular piston mav be used in place of the two pistons 10. The cam slots may be formed in a flange connected to the hub through an intermediate ring which permits of a vernier setting relative to the hub.

    • 449,707. Hydro-mechanical variablespeed gearing ; slipping clutches. DELL, C., Muros, Hall Park Gate, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and READ, H. L., Netherton, Herington Grove, Hutton Mount, Essex. March 28, 1936, No. 9720. Addition to 434,204. [Class 80 (ii)] In automatic variable - speed gearing as claimed in the parent Specification, a mechanical clutch 12, automatic or manual, is arranged between an epicyclic element 9 and the secondary element 2 of the hydraulic coupling. The gearing now comprises a driving vanewheel 1, a secondary vane-wheel 2, connected to a loose annulus 9 through the clutch 12, an interposed vane-wheel 3, directly connected to a loose sun-wheel 4, and a planet carrier 6 integral with the driven shaft 7. The clutch comprises a double conical member 12, integrally connected with the secondary wheel 2, and frictionally gripped between opposed conical members 13, 14, connected to the annulus 9, and loaded by springs 15. The members 13, 14 have inclined surfaces 21, Fig. 2, engaging rollers 19, carried by a drum 16, prevented from reverse rotation bv a one-wav detent 17. Under excessive load, such as the backward reactionary load on the annulus 9 at starting, the inclines 21 ride up the rollers 19, thereby separating the members 13, 14 and disengaging the clutch. The secondary wheel 2 is thus able to continue its forward rotation, and undue heating of the hydraulic fluid due to its being brought to a standstill is avoided. According to the Provisional Specification, the declutching is effected by axial sliding of the secondary wheel, under the influence of a lever system, and such sliding also clutches the secondary wneel frictionally to the vane-wheel 3.
