The restrictive device also includes an aperture (218), limiting the rate at which food can pass from the esophagus portion of the stomach into the intestine. Being removable, the device permits a physician to change the size of the opening in a minimally invasive manner by replacing a removable member with another member having an aperture of a different size and/or shape. The restrictive device can also be combined with an elongated tube (302), or sleeve to selectively bypass the stomach, a portion of the intestine, or a combination of bypassing both the stomach and a portion of the intestine, allowing a physician to endoscopically create an equivalent to the Roux-en-y weight loss procedure.

    • An elongated tube (122) is configured to carry digestive enzymes from the point at which they enter the duodenum, and deposit them downstream into a distal portion of the intestine, such as the distal jejunum, several feet down. This delays the breakdown and subsequent digestion of food. The proximal end of the tube can be secured to the hepatopancreatic ampulla, below the common bile duct using an anchor (260), such as a stent-like device. The tube can include an elongated flexible sleeve (122) coupled at its proximal end to an anchor. The anchor is attached to the hepatopancreatic ampulla and the sleeve is then draped distally, through the intestines. Natural peristalsis carries the enzymes through the tube distally. The enzymes then exit the tube and mix with the chyme further down stream than is normal.

    • A collapsible gastrointestinal anchor can be characterized in various embodiments by a radial force of about 0.1 Newtons (N) or greater at a compressed diameter of 25 millimeters (mm); by an average spring rate of about 13 Newtons/meter (N/m) or greater in a range of motion between a relaxed diameter and a compressive elastic deformation diameter; or by a radial force over the range of motion of about 0.1 N or greater. Typically, the anchor can be adapted to be retained within a subject's intestine, more typically in the duodenum, or particularly in the duodenal bulb just distal to the pylorus. A gastrointestinal implant device includes the collapsible gastrointestinal anchor and a floppy sleeve. The sleeve is open at both ends and adapted to extend into a subject's intestine, the anchor being coupled to a proximal portion of the sleeve. Also include are methods of implanting the gastrointestinal implant device in a subject, and methods of treating a subject for disease. The disclosed gastrointestinal invention leads to an improved ability to secure anchors and devices in the gastrointestinal tract while tending to minimize migration.
