    • 292,179. Davis, K. Dec. 13, 1926. Drawings to Specification. Pneumatic separating.-Apparatus for separating divided materials, of the type in which the materials are caused to move differentially over an air pervious table by the combined action of vibrations imparted to the table and an upwardly acting air pressure, is adapted to deal with un. sized materials by providing on the table a number of zones, corresponding to the number of size ranges in which the material is to be treated, in which the lifting-power of the air pressure is decreased in the direction of flow of the materials and which have areas proportionate to the percentage of impurities in the corresponding size ranges. The invention is shown applied to apparatus as described in Specifications 222,185, 322,186, and 287,184. The zones may be disposed symmetrically on either side of the central line of the table and may conform generally to the position and direction of the separating partitions. A numerical example of the method of carrying the invention into effect is given, and the areas of the different zones are made proportionate to the sum of the percentages of impurities in each size range, the percentage of such size range in the mass of material and an additional marginal percentage to account for imperfect separation in preceding zones.

    • 307,978. Davis, K. Oct. 13, 1927. Divided on 292,179. Pneumatic separating. - In apparatus for separating intermixed divided materials according to density of the type comprising a separating table which is pervious to air and on which the materials are simultaneously subjected to the vibrating action of the table and the upward pressure of air, the air perviousness of the table is varied over its surface in such a manner that the lifting power of the air decreases in the direction of movement of both the heavier and the lighter materials. The invention is described as applied to a table of the shape shown in Fig. 1, comprising inwardly and forwardly inclined separa.- ting partitions 20 leaving an unobstructed central passage 21 for the movement of the heaviest material, such as stone when the apparatus is used for cleaning coal. The table is divided into zones A - - D, which are shaped so as to conform generally to the direction or position of the separating partitions, and in which the lifting power of the air decreases successively by diminishing either the number or size of the perforations. Preferably in the neighbourhood of the discharge 41 for the heavy materials, the air pressure is increased as indicated at B, C, and the zones are arranged symmetrically at opposite sides of the central line of the table. In the construction of apparatus described, the forward discharge end of the table consists of a passage 30, Fig. 4, with air pervious sides, top and bottom and enclosed in a casing 39 the forward end of which has a discharge opening controlled by a pivoted and weighted gate 41. The outside separating partitions 13, 14 are preferably increased in height in a forward direction as shown at 13a, 14 . As shown in Fig. 5, the table is supported from the air chamber by pivoted arms 50, 51. It is moved in one direction by the snail cam 59 and returned by springs 54, stops 55, 56 being provided to produce a jarring impact at the end of the return movement.
