    • The present invention relates to improvements in or relating to saddles, particularly for horses. In particular, it relates to a method for improving the fit of a saddle upon the back of a horse. In particular there is described apparatus and a method of improving the conformity with a horse's back of a conventional saddle having a saddle tree and two generally L-shaped pockets or panels constructed within the saddle(s); wherein the method comprises inserting a set of bladders (30,31,32) into each L-shaped panel and inflating the bladders with air or other fluid medium to form a cushion between the two faces of each bladder such that the two faces of the bladder are held apart; characterised in that each set comprises a pommel bladder (31) and a rear bladder (30), wherein corresponding bladders in each set are in sealable fluid communication; the bladders are constructed from a flexible, substantially inelastic material; the dimensions of each bladder, when deflated, exceed the dimensions of the area in the saddle into which they are to be inserted, such that adjacent bladders within each panel overlap; and further characterised in that a resilient element is inserted between the pommel and rear bladders and the under surface of the seat.

    • The present invention relates especially to saddles for horses. We describe an insert for a panel (3) of a saddle, the insert comprising: a resilient plate (5) having first and second faces; a foam panel (4) attached to the first face; and a pair of inflatable air bags or bladders (6,7) attached to the second face of the resilient plate. The pair of air bags are arranged in a non-overlapping configuration. Suitably, the resilient plate is formed of a high rigidity polymeric material, such as a polypropylene copolymer. Suitably, the foam is a polyether foam having a density of between 80 and 140 kg/m 2 and a compressive load deflection of 15-25 kPa. Advantageously, the resilient plate has a stiffness equivalent to the stiffness of a 2mm thick sheet of a material having a tensile or flexural modulus of elasticity in the range of from 900 MPa to 2000 MPa, preferably in the range of 1000 MPa to 1500 MPa, more preferably in the range of 1000 MPa to 1300 MPa.

    • The present invention relates to saddle trees, especially English saddle trees, particularly for horses. In particular a method of manufacture for a tree is described which is simplified by the use of leather, webbing and plastic in flat sheet material. This fabrication is stitched and riveted together and a Y-bar(101) and headplate (21) are then bolted and/or riveted to the finished leather plastic fabrication. This method of making a tree provides consistent symmetrical performance. The tree fabrication requires no additional finishing or tidying. As soon as the parts are assembled they are ready to go to the next stage of making the finished seat for the saddle.

    • The present invention relates to improvements in or relating to saddle cloths, pads or numnahs, particularly for horses. In one aspect, there is described a saddlecloth comprising a sheet material having a longitudinal spine (81) defining left and right saddlecloth sections; wherein each section includes at least one pocket (84,85) housing at least one cushioning element comprising a bladder (30,31) and resilient element (38), wherein the bladder is formed of a substantially inelastic material and is adapted for inflation and deflation with air or other fluid medium. Preferably, the pocket in each section is a longitudinally elongate and houses two or more bladders dimensioned so as to overlap within the pocket such that, when inflated, the bladders present a substantially uniform thickness. A modification for a saddlecloth for a side-saddle is also described. In a second aspect there is also described a saddlecloth locking element or plate comprising a central portion including securing means for securing to a saddlecloth and comprising at least two opposing wings or arms extending radially therefrom from the central portion. There is also described a method of securing a saddlecloth to the underside of a saddle using said locking element or plate.
