Damping - machines.- In machines for affixing postage and like stamps, a suction device C descends with the handoperated plunger B, separates a stamp from a pile F, and rotates through a half - revolution to carry it to an envelope &c. situated at the base of the apparatus, the face of the envelope being damped by a pad 39 carried by a lever 45 rocked by the plunger. The pad 39 is formed by the end of a wick 37 dipping into a reservoir 36 carried by the lever 45 and is held by a lever 41 pressed downwards by a spring 43. A plate 38 is adjustably pressed upon the wick to regulate the flow of water. A cam slot 50, 51 in the plunger B engages a pin 49 on the lever 45 to rock this, and curves 54, 55 in a spring 53 carried by the plunger engage the pin to depress and raise the lever 45 and the associated damping-devices at the beginning of the down and up strokes of the plunger respectively, so that, when the plunger is raised, the pad 39 swings back above the affixed stamp without touching it. The pivot 47 of the lever 45 works in a slot 48 in the casing to permit the rising and falling movement of the lever. The base H, Fig 11, of the apparatus may contain the water and form a rest for envelopes G during the affixing-operation, the end 39 of the wick 37 being mounted in a lever 41 operated as described above, except that its rising and falling movements are obtained by sliding the casing 2 of the apparatus upon columns 62 mounted upon the reservoir H, the upward movement being caused by springs within the columns and limited by the head of a screw 65.
