    • 671,414. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. June 7, 1950 [July 22, 1949], No. 19354/49. Class. 39 (i). In a T.R. switch, having a filling of 10 mm. of argon and 4¢ mm. of water vapour, generation of excess hydrogen due to the dissociation of the water vapour by the electric discharge is prevented by a catalyst which is active in the presence of water vapour to catalyse hydrogen and oxygen into water. The catalyst may be coated over the whole interior surface of the device or preferably over a portion of the surface in the neighbourhood of the discharge. Alternatively, the catalyst may be applied to a glass and/or ceramic or other support mounted in the device, or a " keep-alive " electrode tipped with the catalyst may be used, in which case adjacent surfaces of the device may be coated with the catalyst by sputtering from the electrode. The metallic inside surfaces of the device are preferably coated with a noble metal of high electrical conductivity such as gold or silver. A preferred catalyst is palladium, which is active down to room temperature and may be prepared by introducing palladium chloride into the device during manufacture and reducing it by hydrogen.

    • 640,701. Television. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. July 29, 1946, No. 22551. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] A fluorescent screen comprising a plurality of interlaced rasters, as for colour television, which is separate from and excited by the light from a cathode-ray tube screen, is made by a photographic or photomechanical process from the raster traced out by the electron beam in the tube; irregularities in the scanning raster are thus reproduced on the separate screen, giving more perfect alignment of the rasters. Some of the rasters may be reflecting instead of fluorescent. In one form the cathode-ray tube has a green screen and the separate screen has alternate lines of silver (reflecting green) and rhodamine (emitting red). In a three-colour screen, the separate rasters may be scanned separately and a separate printing block or stencil prepared for printing the separate screen in different fluorescent inks; or a single block may be used for all three printings. The cathode-ray tube may emit ultra-violet light alone or mixed with visible light, and the separate screen is then formed of a fluorescent raster printed over a fluorescent background of a different colour. Such a screen is preferably viewed from the over-printed side. The separate screen may be larger than the tube screen, or of the same size and mounted close to it. Specification 315,362, [Class 40 (iii)], is referred to.
