[Class 52 (v)] [Also in Group XI] A removable shelf or bracket A attached to the side or rear of a gas or electric cooker has one or more legs C pivotally connected to its outer edge, the free end of each leg bearing against the side of the cooker, and being connected by chain D or other flexible connection to a gripping device, such as a hook E,Fig. 1, or a clip G , Fig. 8, which engages any suitable edge or projection on either the upper or the under side of the cooker top G, so that when the gripping device is engaged with the edge or projection a triangular frame is formed which will support the shelf in a horizontal position. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the hook E is adjustably attached by a screw e and nut to a plate E which is pivoted on a rod carried by an angle plate F. The upper ends of the legs C are adjustably connected to a bracket B on the shelf A. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the pivoted hook is replaced by an angle member G with a longitudinal slot which enables it to be adjusted so that a part of the top of the stove is gripped between it and the angle plate F. The chain D is again connected to the pivoted plate E .

    • 601,342. Gas-lighters. WEBB, sen., J.; WEBB, jun., J., and WEBB, T. Oct. 2, 1945, No. 25527. [Class 75(iii)] A gas lighter comprises a gas tube 6, a housing 7 for a valve 9, Fig. 1, 34, Fig. 7, or 42, Fig. 9, and a pilot jet tube 13 communicating with the housing 7 and having adjacent its mouth a filament 21, one end of this being connected to the central terminal of a battery 26 through an outer tube 18 insulated from the inner gas tube 6 and the other end being connected to the second terminal through the gas tube. The tube 6 is carried by a block 1 having a transverse passage 4, Fig. 6, communicating with a gas supply pipe 3, and the block may carry an arm 22, Fig. 1, to support a container 24 for the battery 26. In the form of Fig. 1, the valve 9 is provided with a push button 16 having a metal washer 31, so that when the button is depressed, gas may pass from the tube 6, through bore 11 in the valve 9 and bore 12 in the housing 7 to the pilot-jet 13, while an electric circuit is completed from the battery, contact 27, arm 22, tube 6, valve 9, washer 31, pin 30 and arm 20 back to the battery through the filament 21, other arm 20, contact 33, outer tube 18, spring contact 32, container 24 and cover 25. In Fig. 7, a valve 34 is rotated by a handle to allow the gas tube 6 and the pilot-jet 13 to communicate through two bores 35, rotation of the handle also closing the circuit through the filament. In Fig. 9, a slide valve 42 may be depressed to allow two bores 45, 46 to communicate through a bore 44 in the valve, the electric circuit being simultaneously closed by the contact 32 engaging the outer tube 18. A tap 39 in the gas supply pipe may be provided with a shoulder engaged by a pin 40, Fig. 10, on the operating lever 41 of the slide valve 42 so that this slide valve may not be operated until the main gas supply tap is open. The arms 20 supporting the filament 21 may be strengthened by an insulating member 201 extending between them, and to prevent the filament from being burned out a capillary bore may be provided in the side of the pilot-jet tube 13 so that the small flow of gas through this capillary bore is ignited and in turn ignites the main flow through the tube 13.

    • 542,111. Turning. WEBB, sen., J., WEBB, jun., J., and WEBB, T. Nov. 11, 1940, No. 16305. [Class 83 (iii)] Chasers for either internal or external chasing are pivotally mounted on a support, mounted for example on the top slide of a lathe, with a projection held by a spring against a surface on a lever that is rocked by a stop engaging the work or an abutment on the lathe to bring a cut away part into position to allow the spring to move the support and withdraw the chaser from the cut. An internal chaser G, Fig. 2, is clamped at g, g' on a support E pivoted at e 1 and having an arcuate slot e 5 engaged by a hold down screw e 3 . A spring A 1 connects screws e 4 on the support and a 6 on the plate A secured to the top slide, so that a projection e is held against the end of a lever C pivoted at a and having a lug c in which is mounted a rod D slidable also through a lug d on the plate A. A spring d 2 is confined between the two lugs, adjustment being effected by lock nuts. On the rod D engaging a part of the work or lathe the lever C is swung and a cut away part allows the spring A 1 to retract the chaser. For internal threads, the support E is replaced by a support pivoted at a 2 the spring A 1 being connected at a 4 . In a modification the lever C is replaced by a pivoted arm carrying an adjustable stop engaging an abutment fixed to the lathe and the spring A 1 is connected to a lever linked to the support E. In a further modification a single plate serves to support both internal and external chasers, and in another modification the support E is mounted to slide.

Class 103(1) In a spot type disc brake the friction pads 25, 26 and 25, 27 are located on each side of the discs 11 or 12 and are guided for axial movement in an axial bore in a housing 18. The pads 26 and 27 are pressed into engagement with the discs by hydraulic pressure between opposed pistons 32 in a throughway in the housing parallel with that for the pads, outward movement of the pistons causing through tangentially pivoted levers 41 inward movement of the pads. As shown there are two discs 11, 12 rotatable with a wheel and the brake thrust thereon is resisted by a radial flange 19 integral with the housing and carrying friction pads 21, but there may be only single disc. Preferably, as shown in Fig. 3, there are two sets of circumferentially adjacent pairs of actuator cylinders 31 arranged at diametrically opposite positions and supplied by a hydraulic conduit 48, 44, 43, 46. The circumferentially adjacent actuator cylinder pistons may operate separate pads or a single common one.

    • 446,555. Electrically-actuated gas valves. WEBB, T., and WEBB, J., 35, Claremont Grove, Didsbury, Manchester. May 24, 1935, No. 15120. [Class 135] An electrically-actuated valve for a gas burner comprises a valve member c carried by a hollow armature C of hardened steel, capable of being magnetized and permanently retaining such magnetism, which moves within a bobbin A on which is wound two solenoids A and A which are momentarily energized for opening and closing the valve respectively. These solenoids are enclosed in a casing B with end caps b of iron or steel and are arranged in a battery circuit with a switch E, of the type described for example in Specification 441,707, [Group XXXVII], so that either can be momentarily energized to open or close the valve, the residual magnetism retained by the armature C holding it in either position against one of the end caps b of the casing. An igniter filament g is included in the circuit of the solenoid A so that the burner is automatically ignited on opening of the valve. Should the filament g be burnt out or broken the solenoid circuit A will be broken and the valve will not open.
