Spring devices.-A power transmission mechanism for use with the spring frames of motor-cycles comprises gearing between the engine i and a gear-box j, gearing between the gearbox and a frame countershaft independent of the gear-box, and a third set of gearing between the frame countershaft and the road wheel. As shown, the countershaft is arranged coaxially with the axis of movement of wheel-carrying arms g controlled by springs h. The horizontal base part of the main frame may be of elongated U form with the engine located between the limbs. The gear-box may be horizontally adjustable upon a bracket l which in turn is vertically adjustable upon a plate k upon the engine, and these adjustments provide means for tensioning the chains m, n; or the engine may be horiontally adjustable in the main frame. The lug f may be arranged to carry the thick end of a laminated spring shackled at its rear end to the pivoted arm g, or the wheel-carrying parts may be in the form of triangular frames controlled by a spring device conveniently in the vicinity of the seat lug c. According to the Provisional Specification, at the countershaft the wheels for the chains n, p and the bushes for the pivot ends of the arms g may be mounted upon a fixed bolt provided with out. side tightening-nuts, the ends of the main-frame stays, into which the bushes are screwed or riveted, being cranked inwardly so that the bearings of the arms shall not project materially.

To avoid disturbance of the transmission mechanism, the countershaft sleeve carrying the driving sprocket wheels m is co-axial with the pivot. Spring devices. - In a spring frame for a motor-cycle wherein the rear-wheel axle is carried by blocks P, Q clamped to leaf springs B and connected by radius-rods to the main frame, the road wheel is detachably connected to the sprocket-wheel O which is mounted on an extension S of one of the blocks. An extension R on each block serves as a pivot for the rod. The front ends V of the rods may be adjustably mounted in brackets W or the brackets may be adjustable on the frame members D. These members may be extended as shown at H to the front of the machine. The usual distance-piece T for the detachable wheel is provided upon the axle, and the rear cross-bar K is removable.
