    • 712,788. Kerbs. PRESTON, J., and SMITH, D. F. March 4, 1953 [May 10, 1952], No. 11891/52. Class 126 Separately formed channels forming spaced sheet metal guides to receive and retain tiles slid into them are secured to the top and front surfaces of a kerb body means being provided at each end of the kerb to locate the tiles endwise, one of said means being readily removable to allow the tiles to be inserted and removed. As shown the invention is applied to an extending kerb of three members 10, 11. The sheet metal tubular member 10 is provided with channel section tile holding strips 12, 13 and 16 on its top and front surfaces respectively. After the tiles have been inserted the channels at each end of the member are closed by screw fixed transverse bars 17 the space between the front and top channels on the top and front of the member respectively being filled in by an ornamental metal strip 19 which is slid into place. The end members 11 may also be formed as sheet metal tubes but as illustrated each is built up from wooden bars 23, 24, 25, covered on the inner face and base with sheet metal 26 and provided on the other two faces with tile receiving channel guides 27, 28. The tiles on the front portion of each member 11 are located endwise by screw attached wooden blocks 31 whilst for the tiles of the end portion plates detachably secured against the end of the portion are used. The junction of the two portions is filled in by a vertically extending angle section strip. After adjusting the width of the kerb each end member is locked in its adjusted position by a screw 35 passing through any one of a series of holes in the central member 10 and any one of a similar series of holes in the member 11. When applied to a rigid kerb the tiles of its front portion may be inserted and removed by making a central portion of each of the channel guides on the top front edge of the kerb and of a length greater than that of a tile readily detachable such that when the portions are removed the central tile on the front or top of the kerb may be removed laterally thus allowing other tiles to be slid along to the centre for removal.

    • 455,211. Tobacco pipes. TARBOX, J. P., 5025, Schuyler Street, Germantown, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.-(also Assignee of Jellinghaus, N. K.) Feb. 14, 1935, No. 4788. Convention date, March 1, 1934. [Class 130] A tobacco pipe or cigar or cigarette holder is.provided between the bowl and mouthpiece with a chamber fitted with a piston which is movable to clean the chamber by ejecting the contents through a valve-controlled port. Fig. 1 shows a pipe in which the chamber 14 in the stem is formed by a tube 20 containing a piston 15, the rod 16 of which extends through a closure 19 at the bowl end of the tube and is fitted with a ring 24 for operating the piston. The tube 20 has a valve port 17 which normally opens to the bowl as shown, but, when cleaning is to be effected, is brought by rotation of the tube 20 into line with an atmospheric opening 18, through which the contents of the chamber are ejected. When the piston 15 is in the position shown, the smoke flows past it through a slot 22 in the tube 20. In a modification, the piston 15 and rod 16 may be formed in one piece, which is cut away to form the chamber 14 as shown in Fig. 4. The bowl may be provided with a perforated grate 29 supported by rods 30 fitting the sides of the bowl. The bowl may also be formed of an inner shell 34 of duralumin or other metal having radial ribs 35, over which is fitted an outer insulating-shell 36. The rods 30 may also then be secured to the top of the shell 36 so as to be removable therewith. Applications of the invention are described to pipes having bowls coaxial with their stems, or to cigarette or cigar holders, the cleaning- piston being operated by sliding the stem through the bowl, so that a disc on the end of the stem also acts to eject the contents of the bowl. Fig. 15 shows another form of pipe in which the piston rod 16 is hollow and has an aperture 22 which, when the pipe is in use, communicates with the chamber 14 to provide the draught. The piston rod is attached to the mouthpiece so as to be withdrawn therewith, as shown, for cleaning, the contents of the chamber 14 being ejected at 18. An absorbent pad 55 may be fitted around the piston rod. The grate 29 of the bowl is attached thereto by a screw 52.
