Two hingedly-connected powered booms 20, 22, supporting flexible piping which connects stationary shore piping with the manifold of a tanker or other movable connection terminate in an outer articulated portion 24. As shown, the coupling end 26 of pipe 14 is supported from an arm 24 which can be swung about a pivot 25 by a rope 46 passed round a driving pulley 51. Lateral movement, transversely of the boom, is allowed by a trolley 29 running on an I-beam 27. The boom 22 is swung about its hinge 23 on the boom 20 by ropes 39 and the boom 20 is swung about its hinge 21 by tackle 33. The boom 20 supports a rigid pipe 11 which is in turn connected to a swivel joint 12. The device may support several pipes 11, 14 side by side. In a modification the arm 24 can be swung directly by attached cables. A swivel joint (not shown) may be used at the coupling end 26 and the boom 22 may extend or retract telescopically; the arm 24 can then be omitted. The rigid pipe 11 and the flexible pipe 14 may be replaced by a single flexible pipe supported at its centre by a hoist suspended from the hinge 23, the swivel joint being used at the coupling end.

Valve gear.-To compensate for heat expansion in valve gear, the valve rocker 12 is mounted on an eccentric 20, the angular position of which is controlled by an hydraulic abutment, Fig. 3. An arm 22 on the eccentric bears against a plunger 24 working in an hydraulic chamber 32 and pressed upwards by a spring 38. When the engine becomes hot, the eccentric 20 rotates slightly and forces the plunger 24 downwards, oil passing out of the chamber 32 through passages 36 and past the clearance around the plunger. As the parts cool, the spring 38 returns the plunger, the oil returning through a passage 30 and past a valve 34. In a modification, the eccentrically-mounted rocker is arranged between the cam and tappet; or the cam shaft may be mounted in adjustable eccentric bearings. Oil may he supplied to the chamber 32 from the lubricating-pump, and the plunger may be replaced by a diaphragm. A crank device may be used instead of the eccentric.

Valves.-In an engine with cylinders parallel to crank shaft and swash plate driving-gear, and in which a pair of rotary valves are mounted eccentrically on the crank shaft, the eccentric 20 on which the valves 14 are mounted are so arranged that the moments due to the centrifugal forces caused by the rotation of the valves counteract the moments due to the inertia of the reciprocating parts. The valves are formed with a series of inlet ports 30 and a corresponding series of exhaust ports, and are fitted with sparking- plugs 35. Valve gear.-In the seven-cylinder engine described, the valves are driven at one-sixth speed in the opposite direction to the crank shaft by means of gearing 17, 21.

Rotary disc valves.-A rotary disc valve, for an internal-combustion or other engine, compressor, or pump, is packed by a plate 10, Fig. 4, with integral or separate expansible washers. The plate shown is adapted for an engine of the type described in Specification 179,333, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for], having a number of cylinders parallel to a central shaft, and has a central opening 20 for the shaft and ports 21 registering with ports in the cylinder heads. The opening 20 is surrounded by a flange with deep cuts 25 alternately from the inner and outer peripheries, which make the flange resilient. Similar flanges may be formed round the ports 21, in which case the gases enter the internal cuts 25, and press the flange against the cylinder head and the plate 10 against the valve. The cylinder heads are formed with flanges 32 which abut against the plate 10, and packing-tips are formed round the ports 21 by means of grooves 30. Alternatively, the flanges integral with the plate 10 may be replaced by separate rings, interposed between the plate 10 and the cylinder head, and formed with cuts similar to the cuts 25, or corrugated tubes, Fig. 5, may be employed. The latter may be free, or may be attached to the plate 10 or to the cylinder head. Rotation of the plate 10 is prevented by lugs engaging notches 17 in the plate.
