Propelling.-Relates to reduction gearing for driving aircraft propellers in which spur-wheels mounted on the engine shaft and propeller hub respectively are engaged by one or more pairs of pinions carried by one or more shafts mounted in a fixed casing, and consists in mounting the propeller hub to rotate on the engine shaft, and in arranging the gear so that it may be applied to an ordinary engine shaft and casing without alteration of the said shaft or casing. The spur-wheel E is formed on a sleeve B keyed to the engine shaft B and secured therto by a tapered ring h and nut L, and engages pinions F on shafts G mounted on ball and roller bearings g, g in a fixed casing D. The shafts C also carry pinions H engaging a spurwheel on a sleeve j, which is mounted on ball bearings C on the sleeve B and is keyed to the propeller hub C. The propeller hub is mounted on the sleeve B by means of a roller bearing c and a thrust bearing a, the thrust being transmitted by the bearing a to the engine shaft and thence to the engine casing A by the usual thrust bearing o. The various ball races, thrust-rings, and distance-pieces are secured on the sleeve B by a nut f. The casing D may be connected to the engine casing or other fixed part of the aircraft by torque-rods.
