    • 248,433. Round, H. J., and Robb, J. G. Nov. 26, 1924. Loud-speakers; diaphragms. -- Loudspeaker diaphragms of the type employed in hornless load-speakers are formed of a cone and one or more truncated cones so that an axial half section of the diaphragms is made up of straight lines at an angle to one another. It is stated that bv this construction n on-uniform radiation of the various frequencies is corrected by variation of the radial rigidity of the diaphragm. The angle of the cone at the apex 2, Fig. 1, may be comparatively small and then gradually enlarged until at the rim 3 it is 180‹ or substantially so. Several examples of coned diaphragms are described, such as a simple cone, Fig. 6, smooth for a portion of its surface from the apex and then fluted to its edge, a simple cone, with an annular surface at its outer edge, an arrangement of two cones apex to apex, Fig. 5, and a cone, with an annular edge, enclosed in a casing with a variable opening at the back. Other examples of diaphragms comprise a plane surface of circular outline having concentric corrugations and curved ribs radiating from a solid centre. The ribs may be of cardboard of V-section, and the covering material of paper corrugated with fine corrugations concentrically. A further form of diaphragm, Fig. 9, is in the shape of a strip having a V-section, the angle of which increases continuously or in steps from one end to the other, the energy being delivered at one edge and travelling in a parallel path across the diaphragm. The outline of the various diaphragms may be circular or oval, or may have a circular or oval base in the case of coned diaphragms. The diaphragms are made of any stiff material, such as metal or paper, or may be made of layers of material of different quality. Coned diaphragms are constructed of thin stiff paper cemented with photographic mounting tissue to a fine silk or blotting paper in a hot press. The diaphragms are suspended freely by elastic bands 8, Fig. 4, attached at several points or by a ring of rubber, linen, &c. Preferably they are suspended by mass action, i.e. there is provided round their periphery a heavy annular ring 7 connected to a fixed ring 6 loosely suspended from a rigid framework.
