    • 666,831. Book binding. BIRCH, F. G., and COOK, J. E. May 22, 1950 [Nov. 18, 1949], No. 29558/49. Class 16. A method of binding or rebinding books comprises the known steps of cutting off or trimming the edges of the leaves adjacent to the spine, applying glue or other suitable adhesive to form a pad, securing a mull thereto, placing doubled over end papers at the back and front of the pad and is characterised by stitching one of the end papers 2 at the front and one at the back to the mull and also to a number of leaves of the book adjacent to the front and back respectively by one or more lines of stitching 1. The pad is secured to its cover 5 by adhesively fixing one of the doubled over end papers 6 to the inside of the front cover and the other similarly to the back cover. The bound book may have a line of stitching 8 passed through grooves in the cover and linen or equivalent strips jointed to the outer leaf sections or end papers of the book as described in Specification 523,502.

    • 613,788. Universal joints. WEYBURN ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and ELLIS, L. J. July 3, 1946, No. 19895. [Class 80 (ii)] A universal joint, which may be employed in the drive for a tool, comprises an Oldham coupling in which the main members A, B and the intermediate member C are coupled by balls or rollers D, E engaging cylindrical recesses A', C and B , C , each formed half in the main member and half in the intermediate member, the recesses have their axes radial and are at opposite ends of coplanar diameters which are at right angles. To allow the four balls D, E to lie in one plane, the grooves A are formed in a rib A on the driving member A, which rib projects into a recess C in the intermediate member C, and similarly the driven member B is recessed at B for this purpose. The coupling is enclosed in a cover F having a part-spherical surface F against which bears a ring G having a corresponding surface G and also a flat annular surface G which bears against the member B. Springs A , B3, B centre the joint when not subjected to load. In a modification, the driven member B may extend to the right through an .aperture in the intermediate member and be contained within the driving member to reduce the overall length.
