Delivery apparatus.-For delivering gummed sheets from a perforating and gumming apparatus into piles for making up books, blocks, and the like, the sheets pass from a perforating machine to gumming rollers 4, 5, and the gummed sheets are delivered by rollers 6, 7 into an adjustable box 23, from which the completed books &c. are taken by hand when completed. To deal with sheets of different lengths, the box 23 is adjustable in position longitudinally by means of screw-and-nut mechanism 18, 19, and the box is carried by racks 20, 21 and is adjustable vertically and angularly. The gummed sheets are guided from the grooved roller 6 by means of guides 8 attached to a rod 9, and are guided around the roller 7 by shields 10 supported by levers 12 which are pivoted coaxially with the roller 7 and are adjustable circumferentially of the roller 7 with the aid of an index 17 and scale 16. The shields 10 carry rollers 13 which assist to deliver the sheets to the box 23, in which the sheets are assembled in register. One side of box 23 is in alignment with the side guide on the feed-table 24.

Coating - machines. -In a machine for perforating, g u m - ming, and collecting sheets of paper, the paper is gummed by passing it over a gumming - wheel which can be lowered by means of a lever, thus, when desired, imparting no gum to the paper. The gumming- wheel 2 revolving in a gum-tank 1 is mounted in adjustable bearings, as shown in Fig. 2. The springs 6 press the shaft and wheel upwards and, in this position, the wheel gums the paper. When no gum is required on the paper, the rod 8 is pulled which rotates the cam 9, and forces the shaft 3 and wheel downwards against the action of the springs 6. A shoe or scraper 11, to regulate the amount of gum on the wheel 2, is provided. The pressure between the scraper and the wheel is regulated by means of a lever 15, a rod 14, a spring 13, and a screw 12.

Slide-rules for calculating the weights of bars, plates, tubes, &c. from their dimensions are provided with a special form of cursor graduated for materials having different specific gravities. Fig. 1 shows the ordinary weight-calculating slide rule and mounted thereon the cursor, which consists of a frame a having two projections c, d, and containing a piece of transparent material b on which are marked two series of lines representing the relative weights of the several materials. One series is used for calculating the weight of plates and square or flat bars, both series for round bars, and both series, together with the projections c, d, for tubes of circular section, boiler shell plates, &c. The scales A, D on the base x are marked in inches for width and in feet for length respectively and the scales B, C on the slide y are marked in inches for thickness and in lbs. and cwts. for weight respectively. The scales B, C, D read from left to right. The Specification sets out examples of the use of the slide rule.
