    • 527,469. Fishing lures. HADAWAY, J. B. April 13, 1939, No. 11185. [Class 48] A bait holder comprises a tubular impaling needle 10 and a shank 34 carrying a hook 12 and adapted to be detachably secured within the tubular needle for instance by the engagement of a head 38 on the shank with apertures 22 in the needle. The latter consists of a tube 16 bevelled at its forward end to form a sharp point and provided at its other end with a grommet 18 serving as a pivot for two arms 28 having spinning vanes and prongs 30 which pierce the head of the minnow bait. A curved bar 26 is welded to the needle to impart curvature to the minnow ; instead the needle itself may be slightly curved. The shank 34 is made of springy material and its reduced end portion 36 is disposed at an angle to its main portion so that the head 38 which has a bevelled forward surface 42 and longitudinal grooves 44 can snap engage in the apertures 22 in the tubular needle ; the walls of the apertures are inclined. In a modified construction the prongs 30 on the rotatable arms 28 are provided with indented parts which embrace with spring action the tubular needle when the prongs are inserted into the bait. The hook 12 may be pivoted to the end of the shank.

[Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i)] A reinforced resilient surface layer 10 for roads and the like is provided with projections 19 which key it to the foundation 11 and, adjacent the projections, with anchoring means 13 which engage with the reinforcement 12. The anchoring means may, as shown, be in the form of tongues depending from heads 14 and having upturned ends 16 which anchor with the foundation, or they may consist of bolts which pass through holes in the foundation and receive nuts for locking purposes. The latter means is used when the foundation is not plastic in the first instance. The surface may be applied in three separate layers, the lower stratum of rubber being placed on the foundation, followed by the reinforcement and finally the upper rubber layer, and the whole is vulcanized in known manner. In the construction of blocks, the resilient surface is composed of one or more layers of rubber, or rubber substitute. Thus, the lowest layer may be compounded to withstand the tearing action of the reinforcement, an intermediate layer being compounded to provide a cushioning effect, and the uppermost layer being made to withstand abrasion. Small blocks may be combined together to form a road-surface marking.

    • 375,345. Luminous signs. VINCENT, J. B., 36, Bibury Road, Hall Green, Birming- ham. March 12, 1931, No. 7594. [Class 3 (ii).] A box sign facia designed to give the effect of a neon sign comprises a stencil e the openings in which are filled with strips of glass f having rounded or curved front edges while the rear edges are bedded against a stationary diffusion plate d illuminated by a lamp b and parabolic reflector c. The sides of the strips f are preferably roughened, and a red-coloured diffusion plate may be used to assist the " neon " effect. The strips f may be secured by cementing, or by insertion into fillets of cork, soft metal, or other substance which overlaps the plate d to form a reflecting or coloured enlargement of the sign visible from the front. A drainage channel a may be provided beneath the hinge a of the box sign. In a modification, the sign is built into a wall, and separate interchangeable letter units are employed. According to the Provisional Specification the strips may be replaced by tubes of glass filled with coloured substances.
