摘要： Apples and other fruit or vegetables to be preserved and packed in solid form, are immersed after peeling, coring and slicing in hot water at a temperature between 170 DEG F. and 205 DEG F. for approximately two minutes, the apples &c. are then immersed in water at a temperature of approximately 212 DEG F. for approximately two minutes and loaded into a sterilsed can or other container, and residual air is expelled by the addition of boiling water prior to sealing. The can or other container is loaded to its utmost capacity, the apples &c. being pressed down by hand with a heated sterilsed ram, in order to ensure a temperature of at least 190 DEG F. at the centre of the pack an electrically-heated metal rod is inserted, being removed as the boiling water is added, and the cans are then sealed by double seaming after which they are immediately immersed in cold water.

[Class 142(iv)] A winding device in a beaming machine comprises bobbins or spool: upon which spare threads are collected during beaming to provide a reserve ir the event of thread breakage A bobbin or collecting spool E rotatably mounted upon a plate C secured to a beaming machine is driven by a belt from a pulley F also mounted on the plate. A further pulley J driven from the drum of the machine drives the pulley F through a pawl and ratchet mechanism H, G the pawl H being forced into engagement with the ratchet plate G secured to the pulley F by a blade spring K and allowing the said pulley F to freely reverse if required. Instead of the blade spring, a spiral spring may be used. For building the thread on the bobbins a traversing device may be used. A slotted traverse arm P carrying a slide R is operated by a lever N through two universal joints 0, O . The lever N carries a roller which engages a uniform motion cam L driven from the drum of the machine through a pulley M.

The device may be constructed as a truck with wheels 18, and struts 19, and with hinged struts, not shown, at the forward end of the frame for support when the drum is horizontal. The drum is held against the frame during tilting by a pivoted hook 22 of adjustable length, or chains may be used. The transverse members 2 are adjustable along the frame. The handles 5 of the frame are pivoted at 7 and bear against lugs 8.

The housing is supported by webs from an annulus 15 surrounding the outlet. The valve is lifted by means of a push button 27 which is connected to the valve through a bell crank 21 and a link 20.

Hydrogen.-In retorts for the manufacture of hydrogen from spathic ore the charge is contained in perforated or openwork cages of different mesh suitable for different grades of ore. The cages are preferably arranged in a vertical retort so that the coarsest material is at the bottom, and the finest at the top of the retort. Expanded metal may be used for the body and bottom of a cage, and a removable lid d is provided to close the top during transport. A flange or projection j may be provided to fit into the top of the cage next beneath it in the retort, and eyes h are fitted for engagement with a lifting and lowering appliance. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 12117/12.
