    • 230,922. Brettell, W. G., and Adamson, A. J. Dec. 20, 1923. Refrigerating, compression machines for.-In a machine operating on the " multiple-effect " system, a part of the liquefied refrigerant after leaving the condenser 2 of the plant is evaporated in a concentric-tube heat interchanger 4, to cool the bulk of the liquefied refrigerant flowing through the interchanger to the usual expansion valve 12 in front of the evaporator 3. The heat-interchanger may comprise straight stretches of double tubes 16, 17, Fig. 2, connected in series by branches 20 and bends 21, or connected stretches of triple concentric tubes 16, 17, 17 , Fig. 4. The evaporation in the interchanger may take place either in the inner tube or in the annular space in the first form described, and in the intermediate space in the triple tube apparatus, the liquid to be cooled flowing first through the outer annular space and then through the innermost tube. The refrigerant for evaporation in the interchanger may be led off from the liquid before it has been cooled in the interchanger, through a pipe 10, or from the liquid after it has been cooled, through a pipe 13. A shut-off valve 15 may be provided to cut out the interchanger when not required. The refrigerant vapour from the interchanger passes through a pipe 22 to a trap or separator 24 wherein unevaporated refrigerant is collected for re-use. The vapour passes to the compressor 1 which may compress the low pressure vapour from the main evaporator 3 at one end and the vapour from the interchanger at the other end, or may take in the higher pressure vapour from the interchanger through middle ports uncovered by the piston after the cylinder has been filled with the low pressure vapour. Alternatively, separate compressors may be used. Specifications 3383/82 and 151,258, [Class 64 (iii), Surface apparatus &c.], are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, a coiled double tube may be used. Such coil' mav be formed bv first welding together straight tubes, inserting one length in the other, and then bending to form a coil. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 17040/03,

    • 457,804. Roller-weighing apparatus for drawing, roving, &c. frames. KINNEAR, J. A., Redmyre, Invergowrie, Angus, and GOW, M. G., 285, Arbroath Road, and DUFF & CO., Ltd., T., Meadow House, Reform Street, both in Dundee. June 6, 1935, No. 16433. [Class 120 (ii)] The pressing - roller of drawing, roving, and like frames is pressed against the co-operating drawing rollers by a pair of levers 8 engaging the bearing- bushes of the pressing-roller 1 through a resiliently mounted bolt so as to apply pressure thereto in the position shown in Fig. 2, and adapted to be swung to the dotted line position 8 to relieve the pressure. The bolt passes freely through the lever and is engaged by a helical spring 9. The roller 1 is raised by depending hooks 11 from levers which, as shown, are the same as the levers 8, a toggle effect being produced by the hooks and the levers whereby the pressing roller is locked in the raised position. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the lever 8 is weighted by a grooved weight 15 adapted to roll along a guide rod 16 when the lever is raised and so to assist the action. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the lever is locked in operative position by a latch 19 and co-operating stops 21, 22 are provided to limit the backward movement.
