    • 530,577. Electric cables and insulation. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., SCOTT, T. R., and WARNER, A. J. June 13, 1939, No. 17284. [Class 36] In electrical apparatus, such as cables, condensers, terminal bushings of transformers &c. in which the insulation includes a liquid halogen derivative of the aromatic hydrocarbon group and solid material, the solid material comprises styrene co-polymerized with between .005 and 25 per cent. of para-divinyl-benzene, with or without plasticizers, to minimize solution of polystyrene in the halogen derivative; with chlorinated diphenyl, 1 to 10 per cent. of para-divinyl-benzene is desirable. In a condenser of wound or stack form, the electrodes of which are separated by solid insulating material, the whole being immersed in such a halogen derivative, the solid material comprises one or more sheets or tapes of the copolymerized material, or of fibrous material impregnated with the materials which are then co-polymerized by heat. In terminators for cables, such as cables insulated with lappings of fibrous material impregnated with polystyrene, the spaces between the lappings being permeated with cable compound, the admixture may be fed into the insulation at the cable end, as through tappings in the sheath, and polymerized in situ, or fibrous material impregnated with the co-polymer may be used to build up the end insulation, and basted at intervals during the building up as in Specification 504,720 ; the termination may include stress grading devices with similar insulation. Rubber, rubber plasticizers such as ceresin wax, plasticizers for polystyrene such as phenanthrene, fluorene, isoamylnaphthalene or other homocyclic carbon compound having two or three fused rings, a boiling point higher than 240‹C. and a low electric moment, or other polymers such as polyisobutylene or polyethylene may also be added. A cable may be provided with insulation comprising polystyrene applied originally as stabilized monomeric styrene or partially polymerized styrene which is then allowed to polymerize in situ, or is destabilized and allowed to polymerize in situ at a desired time, the termination of such cable being treated as above. Specifications 449,868; 490,814, [Group IV], 508,034 and 509,405 also are referred to.

    • 117,221. Warner, W. J., and Matthews & Bro., W. N. Jan. 3, 1918. Mixing-valves. - In a direct-contact water heater for use in bath-rooms, laundries, &c., the steam and water enter the mixing-chamber through oppositely-disposed valves 22, 23, which are operated simultaneously by a rotatable spindle 41. The mixing-chamber contains a removable perforated cylinder 31 divided transversely by a perforated partition 33, through which the mixture passes on its way to the outlet pipe 39. The annular space between the cylinder and the casing 10 is divided by a circumferential rib 35. Longitudinal ribs 10 in the front of the annular space prevent the direct contact of steam and water before passing through the perforations in the cylinder. The inlet valves are operated by the rotation of cams 42, 43 bearing against the valve spindles, the cams being so shaped that, while the water valve opens directly, the steam valve is not opened until the operating handle has been moved over, say, a half its length of travel. The valves slide in perforated sleeves 19 and are pressed against their seats by springs and by the pressures of the steam and water) entering through the pipes 29, 30, respectively.

[Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii)] In a hinged door which opens and closes automatically to permit passage of rolling stock such as colliery tubs, a lever connected to the door is partly disposed in the line of movement of the tubs so as to be actuated to open the door and overlap the latter when fully opened to keep the free end of the door out of the line of movement. The door 1 is connected by an adjustable link 10 at one end of a lever 11 fulcrummed on a fixed vertical pin 12 situated at the side of railway lines 16. An approaching tub 17 engages the end 15 of the lever which, in opening the door, is moved to the overlapping position shown in chain lines. The hinges of the door are so disposed that the door in opening rises to avoid the haulage rope (not shown), and closes under its own weight when the tub moves clear of a bumper 18. Hinges.-The link 10 is connected to the door by a fork embracing a tapered lug 6 of a bracket secured to the door, a pin passing through the fork and lug.

    • Electrical apparatus is provided with insulating-material consisting of polystyrene to which has been added a stable homocyclic carbon compound having two or three fused rings that has a boiling point higher than 240 DEG C., that possesses a low electric moment and is capable of swelling polystyrene, in such proportion that the plasticity of the polystyrene is increased at least five times and that the power factor of the insulating-material does not exceed ,001 at 106 cycles per second. By a compound that possesses a low electric moment is meant a compound that either does not have any polar groups, or has polar groups arranged symmetrically, or has a single chloro, carboxylic, carboxylic ester or etheric group containing not more than 5 carbon atoms. By a compound capable of swelling polystyrene is meant an aromatic compound not possessing hydroxide or keto groups and also either without side chains or having only side chains containing not more than 5 carbon atoms. The plasticizer may be incorporated with the polystyrene either by adding to the monomer before polymerization, by hot rolling with the polystyrene or by dissolving with the polystyrene in a mutual solvent and evaporating the solvent. Compounds specified as plasticizers are phenanthrene, isoamylnaphthalene, a -n-propylnaphthalene, b -methylnaphthalene, fluorene, b -naphthylmethylether, b -naphthylethylether, and a mixture of octahydroanthracene and octahydrophenanthrene. The insulating-material may be used as insulation in coaxial cables, as a dielectric in condensers, and for the construction of dielectric wave guides. According to the Provisional Specification, the plasticizer may be a homocyclic hydrocarbon with one ring or 2 to 4 rings directly connected, with or without side chains containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms attached to not more than half the ring carbon atoms which may contain one etheric, ketonic, carboxylic, carboxylic ester, or chloro group, and which has a melting point below 120 DEG C. and a boiling point above 250 DEG C., methyl abietate and dihydro methyl abietate being included in the examples of such substances.

    • 532,104. Olefine ozonides ; polystyrene. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and WARNER, A. J. May 12, 1939, No. 14233. [Class 2 (iii)] Ozonides of amylene and higher olefines are prepared by passing ozonized oxygen into the olefine at a temperature of -20‹ to -30 0 C. In the case of viscous olefines, a solvent is employed which is subsequently evaporated away. According to the examples, (1) ciiisobutylene, a mixture of 2:4:4-trimethyl-1-pentene and 2:4:4-trimethyl-2-pentene, prepared by dehydrating tertiary butyl alcohol with concentrated sulphuric acid, is placed in a vessel which is surrounded with solid carbon dioxide and ozonized oxygen is passed through a sintered glass plate immersed in the liquid olefine; when the liquid becomes viscous, the temperature is allowed to rise to -5‹C. and the ozonolysis carried to completion; (2) diamylene, which is a by-product of the chlorination of mixed pentanes and consists of 3:5:5-trimethylheptene-2 and 3:4:5:5-tetramethylhexene-2, is dissolved in dry hexane and ozonized oxygen is passed through the solution in a vessel surrounded with solid carbon dioxide ; the hexane is evaporated from the product by means of a vacuum pump ; amylene ozonide may be prepared in a similar manner. A mixture of styrene with any of the ozonides in the proportions used for accelerating its polymerization is stable for some days at a temperature of 0‹-5‹C.
