[Class 83 (iii)] In a chuck for gripping toothed or serrated work-pieces such as gear wheels, two concentric members are relatively rotatable and carry toothed parts engageable between the teeth of the work so that the relative rotation of the members will cause opposing balanced forces to grip and centre the work. ' In one form, for gripping internally toothed gears, concentric sleeves A, A , Figs. 1 and 2, carry toothed segments B, B respectively which engage between the teeth of the work C, the sleeve A being secured to the chuck body A by screws A and the sleeve A being rotatable by means of an arm D thereon and a tangential screw D in the body. A tangential spring D acting through a plunger D on the arm tends to rotate the sleeve A to the released position. In another form, for gripping an externally toothed gear G , Fig. 3, the outer sleeve F has toothed segments F between which project toothed segments F on the inner sleeve which is fixed to the body G3 by screws F . The sleeve F is rotated for gripping the work by the screw H against the action of the spring H' and the front of the chuck is completely closed by a cover plate secured by screws G'. Each tooth of the segments F , F has a central gap H to assist in centring the work, and any teeth which would extend from one segment to the adjacent one are omitted. In another modification, each sleeve carries a complete ring of teeth, the two rings lying adjacent each other, one being fixed to the body and the other rotatable by means of a screw anchored to a swivel on the body and screwing in a lug projecting from the sleeve. In each form a surface machined accurately perpendicular to the chuck axis is provided for engagement by the inner end of the work.

    • 620,525. Making tubes. WAKEFIELD, J. Dec. 6, 1946, No. 36118. [Class 83 (ii)] To avoid stresses due to welding in making a flame-tube or air-casing for a gas-turbineengine, two or more tubular shells 10, 11, 12, formed from deep drawn cups, are connected by interlocking end flanges 13, 15 thereof. The shells 11 and 12 are preferably tapered and the shells 10 and 11 have inturned flanges 15 at the smaller ends, preferably formed by cutting away the centre of the bases 14. The entire base of the shell 12 and the outward flange 13 of the shell 10 may be cut away. The interlocked flanges are rolled to make them secure and gastight. An air inlet head may be secured to the section 10 and an outlet connection may be secured to the section 12 by similar joints, or as described in Specification 620,527, or by welding. The cups may be annealed before turning over the flanges and the complete casing may be plated or metal sprayed before or after or before and after rolling. Any holes necessary in the tube may be stamped out before assembling the shells. Any number of shells may be joined.

    • Apparatus for treating gas comprises a casing (100) containing a gas scrubber section (118) and an electrostatic precipitator section (120) located above the scrubber section. A partition (136) may be located within the casing (100) to separate the precipitator section (120) from the scrubber section (118). The casing has a gas inlet (102) for supplying gas to the scrubber section, a gas outlet (104) for exhausting gas from the precipitator section, a scrubbing liquid inlet (106) for supplying scrubbing liquid to the precipitator section, and a scrubbing liquid outlet (126) for draining scrubbing liquid from the scrubber section. In one embodiment the partition comprises a set of apertures (138) through which scrubbing liquid drains from the precipitator section into the scrubber section, and a set of gas passages (140) for conveying gas from the scrubber section to the precipitator section.
