The worm wheel q is connected. to the roller by a spring plunger r, the withdrawal of which enables the yarn to be drawn by hand through the machine.

Casings, linings, and walls; cooling; charging.-In a blast furnace in which the refractory lining is maintained by the deposition of constituents of the furnace charge about cooling- elements 7 projecting inwardly from the stock shell 6 into the original lining 5, the charge is so distributed over the cross-section of the shaft that it is more permeable to the ascending gases at the periphery and centre than in the intermediate zone. The' charging-hopper 11 is closed by a bell 12 the area of which is about one third that of the upper end of the shaft, this arrangement producing, as shown in Fig. 1, a distribution of the charge in which zones of coarser constituents at the periphery and centre are separated by an intermediate column of finer particles. The elements 7 are fitted with inlet and outlet nipples 25, Fig. 3, for' water circulation and are carried by mounting- frames 21 adapted to be detachably secured by bolts 24 in openings 23 cut in the furnace shell 6. Fig. 3 shows the original lining 5 partially worn away and replaced by a lining 28 formed of constituents of the furnace charge collected around and supported by the cooling-elements 7. The latter may be used, by insertion in the affected part, to repair " hot spots." The upper part of the furnace is formed of an outer casing 8 which supports detachable wear-plates 9, the latter being separated from the outer casing by a layer of refractory material. To prevent the escaping gases entraining dust, the inward inclination of the shaft is reduced to retard the rate of flow of the ascending gases, a suitable taper being 0.375 inch per foot height. The bosh 4 is water-cooled by panels 16 and elements 17, and the hearth 3 is surrounded by a cast-iron jacket 18 set in a well 19 filled with water.

A single manually-operated valve 28 controls the flow of fluid through an inlet port 31, an exhaust port 32 and a regulatable relief port 33, the latter port being provided to permit of cushioning the power stroke. The valve 28 which works in a bushing 27 in a valve casing 26 and is formed with a short lip 39 and a longer lip 40, is provided with a stem 41 operatively connected to a handle through intermediate connections comprising a crank 43, a link 44, a crank 45 and a shaft 46. The handle has an extension with a stop screw whereby its upward movement may be limited.
