    • 203,948. Payne, F. J., and Payne, P. C. Nov. 1, 1922. Compound piston pumps; actuating pumps by hand.-In a double-acting multi-stage compressor, for inflating pneumatic tyres &c., having a casing made in halves joined together in a plane midway between the two coaxial cylinders of each stage, each half containing one of the cylinders of each stage and the pistons of each stage being connected together and actuated by a rocking lever, valve-controlled air passages are provided at the ends of the casing and are connected outside the casing so that the joint between the two half casings need not be air-tight. The pistons of one stage are connected by a stem having an elongated slot, and those of another stage by a stem having a notch, the opposite ends of the rocker engaging the slot and the notch. The Figure shows a compressor having parallel cylinders 3, 4 bored out of the halves of a casing 22 split transversely and bolted together by studs or bolts passing through lugs 26. The low pressure cylinder 3 has inlet ports 5 in the side, and outlet passages 6 in the ends controlled bv automatic valves 7 in valve chambers which communicate through ports 8 leading to the high-pressure cylinder. The valve chambers also contain the high-pressure outlet valves 11 supported in casings 29 screwed into them surrounded by sleeves 32 connected by a pipe 10; one of these sleeves is closed by a cap 34, while the other is open to a discharge nozzle 12. The low-pressure pistons are connected by a stem with a slot 17, and the high-pressure pistons by a stem with a notch 20, the slot and notch being engaged by rollers 1, 2 on the ends of a lever 18 rocked by a hand lever.

    • 311,105. Payne, W. J. May 16, 1928. Ventilators.-A combined ventilator and skylight of the kind carrying a glazed member and having one or more ventilating apertures is adapted to be removably secured to the roof structure by means of a projecting flange 2 on the lower edge of the main casing 1 and an external sleeve. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a fluted glass cone 16 is carried by a member 8 having a projecting rim 9 which protects openings 3 in the upper edges of the main casing and the cooperating sleeve 6. The openings 3 are arranged to be in register, and the annular member 8 is removably secured to the main casing 1 by means of screws 11 provided in lugs 10 on the member 8 and engaging key-hole slots 12 in lugs 13 on the casing 1. The lower edges of the members 1, 6 may be undulated to engage the corrugations of a roof, and a conical extension 15 may be provided to prevent the collection of water on the roof. In a further form, Fig 4, a sleeve 22 is secured to the casing 20 by screws 22a, and the glass cone 27 is adjustable by a screw 24 working in a boss 23 on the casing 20.

[Class 5 (i)] A trap for rats and like vermin of the type comprising a metal chamber 4, the upper side of which consists of a pivoted floor 6 and an interconnected trip plate 7 which may carry a bait, has the floor and the trip plate carried by a counter-balanced under frame 9 the trip plate being pivoted thereto by a bar 10 which is connected by a rod 11, adjustable in length, to a link 13 depending from the underside of the floor of the trap. The lower end of the link has a pin and slot connection 14 to a longitudinally slidable rod 15 the free end of which engages under a roller 16 mounted ina frame 16a pivoted in the chamber 4. The rod is normally pressed into engagement with the roller 16 by a spring 20 and is supported in ball races 15a. The rat, stepping on the plate 7, rocks the link 13 and frees the rod 15 from the roller 16 thus permitting the whole under frame 9 with its associated parts to tilt about its pivot 17 and to precipitate the rat into the chamber. When the floor is relieved of the weight of the rat it swings back to set position, weights 19 being used to adjust the balance. The trap chamber, and the moving parts may be in two separate parts and the upper portion may be covered by a wire cage left open at one end. When a number of traps are used they may be connected by enclosed runways to a central collecting chamber from which the animals may be removed periodically.

    • 413,284. Coated fabrics. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., 32, Osnaburgh Street, London, MADGE, E. W., and PAYNE, F. J., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. Dec. 6, 1932, No. 34521. [Class 140.] In a method of forming coated sheet material involving the distribution of comminuted material to a given depth on a travelling adhesive-coated backing by the action of pins or spikes which comb the surface in succession, some of the pins or spikes are stationary relative to the point where the material is fed and others are carried round in a circular path about an axis transverse to the travelling surface. Comminuted material 6 is spread to a uniform layer on a textile or other backing 1 which has been coated with adhesive by a roller-andtrough apparatus 2, by passing the backing over a table 5 and successively beneath a feed control 7 in the form of a fixed, straight-edged plate or a fixed row of pins or spikes, a rotating shaft 8 set with pins or spikes 8 , a fixed bar 9 set with pins &c. 9 , and a rotating shaft 10 with pins &c. 10 . The pins on the shafts and bar members are arranged in longitudinal rows, the pins in one row being staggered in relation to the next. The distribution or length of the pins may be varied across the shafts &c. to produce furrows in the coating. Adjustable side shields 19, spaced from the table 5 to allow the backing to pass beneath, are provided to limit the sideways distribution of the material. The comminuted material may consist of disintegrated rubber, rubberized fabric, sponge rubber, or other rubber scrap, or of ground cork, and may be dry or wetted, for example with an aqueous rubber dispersion. The uniformly coated fabric may be heated, for example within a hood 11, to vulcanize the rubber, or may be passed through consolidating rollers. The Provisional Specification is not restricted to the production of coated sheet material, and describes the production of rubber &c. sheeting.
