    • An improved dryer-cooler apparatus (10) cures or dries a heat sensitive coating (9) on a moving subtrate (5) in a manner to minimize problems related to heating. The apparatus comprises a cooling plate (20), and end block 30, 31) at each end (25, 26) of the cooling plate and a plurality of heating lamps (50) extending between the end blocks, above a reflective face (21) of the cooling plate. The cooling plate has a plurality of cooling passages (27) which extend from the top of bottom ends thereof, and each end block has a plurality of lamp openings (38) and has a plurality of coolant passage openings (39) that each aligns with a coolant passage of the cooling plate. The ends (52, 54) of each heating lamp are supported in an unencumbered manner in the lamp openings (38) of the end blocks. Thus, the heating lamps (50) and the cooling plate (20) and end blocks (30, 31) can expand and contract without damage when cyclically heated and cooled during periodic operation of the dryer-cooler apparatus. Coolant from a refrigeration system is circulated in a serpentine manner through the cooling plate while the heat generat­ed by the adjacent heating lamps is reflected down­wardly from the cooling plate reflective surface. Thus, the cooling plate acts as a heat-sink to absorb unused energy from the lamps and to cool the space on the opposite side of the cooling plate from the heating lamps.

Apparatus for curing a photosensitive coating (2) on a moving substrate (3) comprising a high intensity light source (50), which is substantially shielded to prevent its direct rays from striking the photosensitive coating (2); a first reflector (40; 41, 42), which partially surrounds the light source (50) to focuse a portion of the light therefrom in a beam generally parallel to the moving substrate (3); a transparent coolant-filter (70), which is located on the opposite side of the light source (50) from the first reflector (40), for filtering the light beam from the light source; a second reflector (100), which is on the opposite side of the filter (70) from the light source (50), to receive the focused and filtered light beam and redirect it at an angle to impinge in a band on the photosensitive coating (2) to cure it as it passes beneath the apparatus (1) on the moving substrate (2).
