[Class 60] A work-holding attachment for machining surfaces as by grinding comprises a base on which is a headstock carrying a spindle having mounted thereon a plate provided with projections whereby, by the use of a slip gauge, the angular position of the plate may be set, means also being provided for locating the work-piece in relation to the base. The base plate 1, Fig. 1, has therein a longitudinal locating slot 2 to receive a tenon on a headstock 3, in the form of a block, which is secured by dowels and a screw 4. Rotatable in the headstock is a spindle 5 having shoulders to coincide with the end faces of the headstock, the reduced projecting end portions of the spindle being screw-threaded, and the outer end having secured thereon a sine plate 6. The plate 6 has four equidistantly spaced projecting pins 7, so that the plate and spindle can be set to a desired angle by means of slip gauges placed between the pins and the base. A tailstock 8 also is similarly secured to the base 1 and carries a shouldered spindle 10 carrying a bracket 11, the spindle being hollow to carry a centre 12 adjustable by nuts 13,14 co-operating with the bracket 11 ; a centre 15 with a tapered shank also fits, without longitudinal adjustment, in the spindle 5. The work-piece is carried by a cradle fixed to spindles 5, 10 and comprising ends 16, 17 and a table portion 18 having its upper face accurately finished and provided with a slot for a work locating key 20, and with tapped holes 21 for attachment of locating plates ; the height of the work on the cradle is adjusted by means of a gauge 22 held between the centres 12, 15 and the use of slip gauges, and with the arrangement described, a flat surface at some desired angular position may be ground on the work. The headstock is provided with two wing plates 25, one at each side, which can be used as a base by removal of the headstock from the base 1. for forming a prescribed radius on a grinding wheel. For this purpose, a plate 26, Fig. 5, is secured by a screw 27 to the spindle 5 and carries a bracket 28, located by a key 29 and plate 30, a diamond holder. 31 being fixed in the bracket with its point at'the required distance from the axis of the spindle 5 ; this distance is set by a gauge 32 fitting in the spindle and having a flat surface 33 coincident with the spindle axis, and the use of a slip gauge.

    • Liquid sulphur dioxide from one or more containers is discharged into a heated receptacle associated with a circulatory system so that the sulphur dioxide passes as a gas into the system and is circulated through a chamber containing the materials to be treated. The supply of sulphur dioxide is controlled in accordance with the rate of its absorption. After the gas has been circulated through the materials for a short time, bleaching is allowed to proceed without such circulation. The apparatus may, as shown, comprise an airtight chamber 1 in which the material to be treated is placed on shelves E, hooks, poles 9 &c. Sulphur dioxide from one or more gas cylinders 24 is led by pipes 22, 23 under control of a valve 26 into a basin 19 disposed beneath and secured to the bottom of a conduit 17, which connects an outlet aperture 11 of the chamber 1 to the suction side of a fan in a casing 12. A heating chamber 30 under the basin 19 vaporizes the liquid sulphur dioxide and the gas formed passes into the conduit 17 to be directed into the chamber 1 through an inlet opening 10 by a conduit 18 connected to the delivery side of the fan. A longitudinal partition down the chamber 1 to near the end opposite the fan ensures a complete circulation of the gas through the chamber 1. An observation window and a hinged or removable panel are provided in the conduit 17 adjacent the basin 19 to facilitate inspection and cleaning.
