    • 256,348. O'Connell, J., and Kerr, H. H. May 19, 1925. Milk cans and the like, cleaning.-A device for cleaning hollow articles, particularly milk cans, comprises a tank 1 supporting a shell 17 provided with an angular opening and enclosing a rotatably-mounted grid formed of members 20, 21, the grid together with partitions 19 forming compartments each of which is adapted to receive an inverted milk can and a lid. The partitions 19 and the members 20 are secured to a sleeve 11 surrounding a column 2. The lid is held in place by a spring-pressed arm 24. The grid is provided with a rack 27 engaging a pinion 28 mounted on a shaft 29 which carries a toothed wheel 34 gearing with a pinion 35 on a shaft carrying fast and loose belt-driving pulleys 38, 39. The shaft 29 is provided with a wheel 74 formed with a notch 73 which is adapted to be engaged by a dog 72 on a spring-pressed lever 68 provided with a belt-shifting fork 76. When the dog 72 engages with the notch 73 the fork shifts the belt 40 on to the loose pulley 39, and the rotary movement of the grid stops. To start the grid, the handle 67 of the lever 68 is actuated to shift the fork and disengage the dog 72. In the construction shown, there are five compartments within the shell 17 occupying stations A - - E, and the arrangement is such that a milk can in a compartment passes from one station to the next, being stopped automatically on reaching a station and being re-started at the will of the operator, and during the intervals of rest it is subjected to the action of steam, sprays of cleansing liquid, hot water, and hot air. At station A where the milk cans are deposited on the grid and removed therefrom, there is provided a nozzle 58 in communication by a pipe 55 with a steam manifold 56. The supply of steam is controlled by a valve 51 operated by means of a cam 42 on the shaft 29. At station B, the cream, &c. from the can is collected by means of an arm 111, partly immersed in cleansing solution in the tank 1, the arm diverting the scum on the solution to an opening 112. The solution is kept rotating by admission of steam through a nozzle 90 connected by a bridge piece 92 to a pipe 91. The can at station C is subjected to sprays of cleansing solution pumped through nozzles 88, 89 for cleansing, respectively, the interior and exterior of the can. At station D, the can is cleansed by hot water from nozzles 66, 66a, the hot water being formed by condensation of steam in pipes 94 submerged in the cleansing solution. The water is forced out by pressure of steam controlled by a valve 59 which is actuated by a cam 43 on the shaft 29. By means of a dash-pot 63 the closing of the valve 59 is retarded sufficiently to allow all the condensed water to be removed from the pipes 94a. At station E, the can is dried by means of a fan which forces air into a chamber beneath the tank 1 and up through pipes 109. The air is heated as it passes below the tank.
