    • 483,904. Pipe joints. SMITH, H. P. Oct. 2, 1937, No. 26729. [Class 99 (i)] Material for cementing a spigot and socket joint is prevented from escaping during setting by a canvas strip 12 tied around the spigot at one edge, held at the other edge by a split ring 13 and having means for expanding it into a groove in the socket. The expanding means may comprise a sleeve attached to one end of the ring and containing a spring which acts on the other end of the ring. As an alternative, the ends of the ring may be formed with right- and left-hand screwthreads that engage a sleeve by which the ends of the ring are forced apart. As a further alternative, one end of the ring may carry a sleeve into which the other end of the ring projects, the sleeve being provided with slots through which a wedge may be passed to force the ends of the ring apart. In order to prevent cockling of the canvas strip while the spigot is being introduced into the socket, a shield 24, Fig. 8, is placed between the strip and the spigot. The shield 24 is held by arms 25 that engage the socket. The shield may be constructed in sections laid one adjacent to another.

    • 478,845. Pipe joints. SMITH, H. P. Oct. 31, 1936, Nos. 29666/36 and 3957/37. [Class 99 (i)] In a spigot-and-socket pipe joint, the spigot is centralized and secured within the socket bv an elastic member which is applied to the spigot under tension so that its cross-section is reduced; the tension on the elastic member being relieved to effect expansion of the latter after insertion of the spigot into the socket. In the joint shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the elastic member is in the form of a ring b which is located on the spigot a, so as to form a cavity c between itself and the inner end of the socket c, and is split by a tool inserted through a hole c in the socket, the cavity c , hole c and the gap b between the ends of the ring b preferably being filled with cement d. In a modification, two elastic rings are employed, the rings being either in contact with one another or else spaced to form a cement-receiving cavity. Fig. 11 shows a joint in which a length g of elastic material is lapped under tension around the spigot in one or more complete convolutions, the ends g , g2 of the length being released after assembly of the parts. The elastic member may be in the form of a ring, Fig. 13, which is formed into two loops h , h by fixing together, e.g. by vulcanization, spaced parts h, h thereof, the loop h being stretched and applied to the spigot with the loop h projecting outwards and the fixed parts h h being released when the spigot has been inserted into the socket.
