    • 29,000. Winter, H. W. Dec. 27, 1910, [Convention date]. Embossing and stamping; branding by heat; printing-surfaces; stopping-arrangements. - A machine for stamping burnt, gold-leaf, and other marks on leather &c., especially on parts of boots and shoes, is constructed so that the time the die remains in contact with the work can be adjusted; and the machine is provided with electrical means for heating the dies, which are adjustably mounted in a stamping-head so that the point of nearest approach to the platen is adjustable. The work-support is mounted on a removable bed-plate which carries an adjustable gauge and adjustable spring - supported gauge-pins. As shown, the machine is driven from a main shaft 2, Fig. 2, which drives a gear-wheel 12 on a shaft 14 fitted with a onerevolution clutch of the Horton type for driving an eccentric 17, which actuates a connecting-rod 49 and lever 41 connected to a tubular carrier 40, in which the stamping-head is adjustably secured. The die-holder 46 is formed with a tapered shank 47 removably received in a plunger 48 controlled by a pair of nuts 52 and by a spring 50 adjustable by a screwed thrust-piece 52 clamped in its adjusted position by a screw 51 which binds together split sides of the carrier 40. The carrier is guided by parallel ribs engaging fixed vertical guideways, and a screw 43 moving in a groove prevents the plunger 48 from turning. The die-holder 46 is bored to receive a sleeve of insulating-material and a pair of resistance coils 54. The die is secured between a fixed undercut rib 55 and a spring-controlled undercut slide 56, which can be retracted by a lever 59. The work is supported on a platen 60 on a bedplate 62 with a bevelled rear edge fitting an undercut slot in the casing, screws serving to secure the front edge. An adjustable gauge 66 is secured by a screw in a lug 67 at the rear of the plate 62, and a pair of spring-raised gauge pins 64 are mounted in sockets carried on a plate 69 adjustable by a screw 71. The clutch mechanism referred to above for controlling the movement of the actuating-eccentric 17 comprises a freely-mounted member 16, Fig. 3, integral with the eccentric 17 and acted on by a brake member 15 to prevent accidental movement of it. A rotary member 18 acted on by a spring 22 tends to rotate so as to cause rollers 20 to connect the constantly rotating gear 12 with the member 16. A clutch dog 24, Fig. 5, normally prevents the member 18 from moving, and, to start the machine, the dog 24 is moved out of the path of a stud 30 on the member 18 by depressing a spring-controlled pedal lever 74 fitted with a pivoted catch 73, which, after acting on a lever 72 on a shaft 28 to which the dog 24 is fixed, is moved free of the lever by a pin 77 and moves back to normal position without acting on the lever 72. The member 18 is fitted with a second stud which is diametrically opposite but displaced axially to the stud 30, and this stud is engaged by a second dog 26 freely mounted on the shaft 28 so as to unclutch the drive when the die is pressing on the work, and the drive remains unclutched as long as desired to ensure a perfect marking or burning- in of the design. At the end of the desired interval, the dog 26 is released, and when the die returns to normal position, the dog 24 again unclutches the driving-mechanism. The releasing of the dog 26 is effected by an arm 88 on a shaft 81 which is acted on by a spring which normally keeps a pin 89 on a worm-wheel 86 on the shaft 81 in contact with an arm 92 fitted on a disk 93 which is adjustable in position to vary the time during which the die remains in contact with the work. The releasing of the dog 24 causes an arm 95 on the shaft 28 to move a worm 85 on a shaft 83, carried by a bearing 82 which can pivot around the main shaft 2, into engagement with the wheel 86. The shaft 83 is geared by worm gearing to the main shaft 2. The arm 95 acts on a projection on an arm forming part of the bearing 82, and a clutch 87 holds the bearing so as to maintain the gears 85, 86 in contact. The shaft 81 next rotates until the arm 88 releases the dog 26. The shaft 81 is then freed by moving the wheels 85, 86 apart by releasing the catch 87 by the action of the pin 89, thereby allowing the bearing to turn on the shaft 2, and the shaft 81 then returns to normal position.
