    • 256,274. Newman, J. G. July 31, 1925, [Convention date]. Matches.- Book matches are made from a single piece of material A, such as pulp board, pasteboard or thin veneer wood preferably covered on the outside with paper to prevent splintering, the material being formed as a strip longitudinally grooved to provide a thinned bending portion B, and the match stems C being stamped or punched, perpendicularly to the bending portion on one or both sides. Striking mixture G may be provided remote from the heads F. The stems are impregnated with ember-quenching solution and their free ends with inflammable liquid before heading. The matches may be punched from wing pieces H, Fig. 7, and folded inwardly. Holes P, Fig 14, may be provided in an extension M of each section for hanging up one or a number, the strip being perforated along lines O, R, to permit detachment of sections or half-sections. A line S preferably on both sides of the material is scored between the stems and butt portion. The outer surface of a book may be covered with thin paper K to conceal the matches and receive printed matter.
