    • New unsaturated polyester resin alkyds are disclosed which have an acid number in the 30 to 60 range, viscous behavior at room temperature, a viscosity not exceeding 300,000 cps at 45.degree. C. and a viscosity not exceeding 500 cps at 25.degree. C. when diluted with styrene up to a content of 31% by weight referred to the total of alkyd plus styrene. The alkyds are obtained by reacting together compounds selected from classes including: (A) acids and unsaturated anhydrides in amounts ranging from 0.4 to 1.0 moles; (B) other dicarboxylic acids; (C) one or more polymeric glycols comprising molecules which contain more than 90% by weight of 1,2-propyleneoxide units at a rate of at least 50%, preferably 60%, moles out of the total of (C)+(D) glycols; and (D) other glycols at a rate of no more than 50% moles out of the total of C+D glycols, there being at all times present at least one component selected from class (A) and at least one component selected from class (C). The invention is also concerned with unsaturated polyester resin compositions incorporating said alkyd and at least one cross-linking monomer selected from vinyl and allyl monomers in amounts no smaller than 10% by weight of the total weight.

    • A low viscosity unsaturated polyester resin for making glass fiber reinforced products is described, which comprises an alkyd prepared by esterification of maleic anhydride and/or acid and/or fumaric acid, optionally together with phthalic anhydride and/or acid, with one or more glycols, essentially comprising dipropylene glycol, and further comprises 27-34% by weight (of the total resin) of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the alkyd, essentially chosen among styrene and vinyl toluene, the alkyd having a molecular weight/double bond factor between 200 and 360 and an amount of free functional groups between 80 and 100 mg of KOH per g of alkyd inclusive. The products obtainable from said resin by conventional processing techniques are also described. The low viscosity of the resin results in better workability and better behavior of the resin during molding while the mechanical properties of the finished products are very good.

    • A low viscosity unsaturated polyester resin for making buttons is described, which comprises an alkyd prepared by esterification of maleic anhydride and/or acid and/or fumaric acid, optionally together with phthalic anhydride and/or acid and/or adipic, sebacic, azelaic or dodecanedioic acid, with one or more glycols, essentially comprising dipropylene glycol, and further comprises 20-30% by weight of the total resins of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the alkyd, essentially chosen among styrene and vinyl toluene, the alkyd having a molecular weight/double bond factor between 300 and 390 and an amount of free functional groups between 80 and 100 mg of KOH per g of alkyd inclusive. The buttons obtainable from said resin are also described. The disc blanks made from said resin have better workability and cause less wear of the tools than those of the prior art and the finished buttons have greater impact strength, and better lustre, greater color stability when exposed to sun light.

    • A low viscosity unsaturated polyester resin for making products, optionally reinforced with glass fibers is described, which comprises an alkyd prepared by esterification of maleic anhydride and/or acid and/or fumaric acid in association with isophtalic acid, with one or more glycols, essentially comprising dipropylene glycol, and further comprises 25-40% by weight of the total resin of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the alkyd essentially chosen among styrene and vinyl toluene, the alkyd having a molecular weight/double bond factor between 300 and 390 and an amount of free functional groups between 50 and 85 mg of KOH per g of alkyd inclusive. The products obtainable from said resin are also described. The resin behaves better in processing has lower heat development and shrinkage than the comparable prior art resins while the mechanical properties of the finished products are very good.

    • The specification describes polyesteramide polymeric materials containing uble bonds which are capable of cross-linking with vinyl or allyl monomers and to which the concurrent presence of ester and amide groups imparts particular characteristics. The specification also describes polyesteramide resins obtained by cross-linking the aforesaid polyesteramide materials with at least one vinyl monomer. The specification further describes a method for the production of the aforesaid polyesteramide materials by the polycondensation of compounds at least part of which comprises amino groups, which groups are already engaged in the amide bond and are not reactive with the double bonds. The specification finally describes fabricated objects, fibers, films and filaments obtained from the aforesaid unsaturated polyesteramide materials.
