    • 550,266. Refractory compositions. WATSON, G. Aug. 15, 1941, No. 10432. [Class 22] [Also in Group XII] Furnace arches, roofs and walls are built up of metal casings A having their inner surfaces roughened or provided with burrs, buttons, rings or hooks to key with a refractory concrete lining F comprised substantially of 1 part aluminous or quick hardening cement, 1¢ parts diatomite or Moler earth, and 2 parts crushed fire brick or " grog." The sides B of the casings may be inclined and fitted with steel sections C to give the necessary strength to prevent outward thrust on its supports. If the casings are formed as pressings with vertical sides they may be fitted with internal wedge shaped elements E. The linings may be applied to the inverted arch sections before erection, centering being unnecessary. The Provisional Specification states that the metal casings may be lined with other refractory mixtures or firebricks set in fireclay. It also states that the metal casings may be replaced by skewback members connected by curved steel bars.

[Classes 3 (ii) and 116] A spacer for stacking cut meats, e.g. steaks &c., or other foodstuffs, comprises thin strips 13 of cellulosic material &c. which are assembled by partly slitting and interengaging the strips, so as to provide thin edges for resting on a lower and supporting a superposed layer of meat &c., the strips having apertures 14 and/or notches 15 to permit free circulation of air. In a modification, tubular members 16, Fig. 7, with thin edges may be connected by strips 17, air circulating notches 18 being provided. The tubular members may be anchored in a sheet of material so that the tubes project on both faces of the sheet, the tubes being slotted for air circulation. In a further modification, parallel sinuous strips 24, Fig. 6, may be secured in a sheet 23 so that the strips project on both faces of the sheet. The sheet may have a beaded &c, edge and apertures 25 in the sheet and notches 26 in the strips are provided for air circulation. The spacers may constitute shelves for a refrigerating chamber &c.

    • 241,739. Watson, G. Nov. 26, 1924. Current motors; regulating. -In wind motors having rotor vanes 1 arranged radially to the shaft 2 and utilizing the so-called Magnus effect, and wherein the wind power itself is used to cause the rotor vanes to revolve on their own axes, friction rollers 7 for rotating the vanes 1 are driven by engagement with a fixed friction ring 5. Alternatively, the members 5, 7 may be toothed gears. For starting the motor, ordinary screw vanes 8 are provided on the same or an independent wind-wheel, and these vanes may be arranged outside or inside the ring of rotor vanes 1. The rotor vanes may be cylindrical or conical. Regulation may be effected by varying the effective diameter of the friction ring 5, or by regulating the amount of the friction slip, or by turning the motor more or less out of the wind, or by allowing the ring 5 to revolve under the control of an automatic brake. The motor may drive a screw or paddle-wheels for ship propulsion.
