[Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] Manually-actuated apparatus for conveying articles from one position to another has the article-engaging means mounted in such a manner that it can be moved to any position in a horizontal plane and also vertically. The apparatus is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 arranged to transfer metal billets from a furnace to an extrusion press. Each billet 2 is supported by spaced prongs 29 mounted on a tubular operating handle 11 which is suspended from a trolley 7 movable along a rail 8 disposed transversely to the furnace 1. The rail 8 is carried by trolleys 9 which are mounted on rails 10 extending longitudinally of the furnace. Lugs 12 on the handle 11 are pivotally connected by a stud 13 to a member 14 which is pivoted at 15 to the piston-rod 16 of a cylinder 18 suspended from the trolley 7. When the billet carrier is to be lowered, a valve (not shown) in the piston is opened to allow the passage of fluid from the underside to the top. The valve is actuated through a rod in the hollow pistonrod, bell-crank lever 26, and link 27 by a lever 28 mounted on the end of the handle 11. The billet carrier, handle, piston-rod and their connections are balanced by a counterweight 20.

When the main m is located in a path lying between the terminals s the sound becomes inaudible. An electric lamp o may be provided in the primary circuit of the induction coil e to indicate when the circuit is ccmplete.
