Superheaters, steam.-Several independent superheating-elements are separately connected to the boiler steam pipe 5 and the engine steam pipe 6 by pipes 7, 8, Figs. 2 and 6, each of which is fitted with a stop valve, so that any element can be isolated at will. The elements preferably consist each of a divided header 16, Fig. 5, and concentric tubes 12, 13, arranged as shown. Means for flooding the superheater automatically on the stoppage of the engine and draining it when the engine is started are also described. One form of such automatic apparatus is shown in Fig. 6. Water from the boiler is admitted to the superheater through the pipe 26 and the valve 28 ; it is discharged therefrom through the valve 29 and pipe 30. The valves 28, 29 are connected together so that one opens as the other shuts. The connecting-spindle passes through a cylinder 33 and carries a piston ; a spring constantly tends to open the flooding-valve and close the discharge valve. When the engine is started, steam is admitted to the cylinder 33 by a pipe connected to the engine stop valve, so as to close the flooding-valve and open the discharge valve. The engine cylinder is diagrammatically indicated at 36, and the stop valve at 39. Fig. 7 shows a modified arrangement in which the stop valve 39, when opened, closes an electric circuit by bringing together two spring arms 44. A solenoid 46 is thus energized to open a valve 43, which supplies fluid under pressure to the cylinder 33.
