    • BAFFLED STOVE of the Invention A Baffled Stove is described having a generally rectangular heating structure with its lower or bottom portion adapted to form a firebox for receiving fuel such as wood or coal. A primary air passageway is provided for introducing air into the heating structure at or near the level of the firebox. Controls are also provided to a just tile quantity of primary air introduced into the heating structure. A hinged door is mounted in the front door of the rectangular heating structure for introducing fuel into the firebox. A secondary air inlet is in communication with a conduit positioned in a plane horizontal to the firebox to provide a baffle for directing the flow of the products of combustion and also for preheating the secondary air as it passes therethrough. The preheated air exits at a point opposite to the secondary air inlet. The gases of combustion and smoke circulate circuitously through the fire chamber and comingles with the preheated secondary air as it exits from the horizontal conduit to produce additional or secondary burning. The unused air and final products of combustion are carried to the atmosphere through a flue outlet located at or near the top of the heating structure on a side opposite to the secondary air outlet.

    • To prevent the formation of scale, ferric or zinc or aluminium chloride or sulphate is introduced into the evaporating shell or shells of a sea water evaporating plant or into the feed water for the plant. 0.25 pounds of salt per ton of sea water is added. The addition causes precipitation of magnesium as magnesium hydroxide and carbonate is destroyed by the acidity resulting from the hydrolysis of the added salts. Three apparatus are described. In Fig. 1 sea water is fed by pump 5 through an ejector condenser 6, a main condenser 7 and line 8 to evaporator 3. Part is by-passed to waste at 16 and part is fed to tank 18 to which a salt or solution of a salt-e.g. ferric chloride-is added from a funnel 19. From the tank the feed passes to evaporator 3. The evaporator operates under vacuum created by ejector 13 in condenser 7. Condensate from condenser 7 is pumped to distilled water tank 12 which also receives condensate from heating-coil 2 and condenser 6. Brine is withdrawn at 22. The apparatus of Fig. 2 (not shown), is similar but solution from tank 18 is pumped to the evaporator 3 instead of flowing by gravity. The apparatus of Fig. 3 (not shown) is similar to that of Fig. 2 but is a multiple effect apparatus, the feed water being fed from a tank in which it is mixed with the salt in parallel or in series to the separate effects through heat exchangers heated by the vapours from the separate effects. The brine is withdrawn in series or parallel.ALSO:To prevent scale formation in sea-water evaporators 0.25 pounds of ferric or aluminium or zinc chloride or sulphate per ton of sea-water is added to the feed to the evaporator or injected into the evaporator (see Group III).
