    • 574,195. Bearings. BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and MITCHELL, E. Jan. 13, 1944, No. 683. [Class 12 (i)] A bearing assembly for the hollow shaft of a hydraulically operated variable-pitch propeller comprises a plurality of flanges on the shaft which engage corresponding annular recesses on a bearing housing, which housing may be formed as an extension to the engine crankcase, with the hydraulic pressure fluid supplied to one or more of the annular recesses so that part of this fluid passes between the faces of the flanges and the recesses to lubricate the thrust and journal bearing surfaces formed thereby while the other part of such fluid passes by radial bores in the particular flanges to the hollow -shaft interior and thence to the variable pitch mechanism. Thus the hollow propeller shaft I has flanges 2-5 engaging annular recesses 31, 41 and end faces of the bearing housing 16. Pressure fluid for operating the variable pitch mechanism is supplied through passageways 18, 19 to the annular recesses 31, 41 and passes thence through radial 'bores 13, 14 in the shaft collars 3, 4 to concentric pipes 8, 9 in the hollow propeller shaft 1 ; the pressure fluid also serves for the lubrication of the combined radial and thrust bearing by passing both above and below U- section rings 17 which fit into the space between the shaft flanges and around the separating walls of the annular'recesses and act' as the bearing liners, the fluid which has acted as lubricant draining to the space 20. The propeller shaft 1 is shown coupled to the engine crank-shaft 7.

    • 285,957. Green, G., Mitchell, J. E., and Mitchell, T. Nov. 20, 1926. Openers etc; feeding openers &c.-A machine for opening out and straightening cotton and like fibres, artificial silk, comprises a feed roller a and feed plate b, a licker-in roller c co-operating either with two small rollers c rotating more slowly in the opposite direction, or with dirt knives and grid, and a conduit d leading to cages h which deliver the material to drawing-rollers w and a can x. The material may be given a preliminary opening in a device m comprising a hopper p, in lattice o leading to a roller n and evener and stripper rolls q, r. The fibres are delivered through a box s to an apron u feeding the roller a. The material passing along the conduit d may be divided by vertical partitions in the conduit and the perforations in the cages h may be arranged in annular strips. The conduit may converge towards the cages so that only the central portion of them is used. A stripping plate f co-operates with the licker-in roller c and a bar g directs the fibres and prevents eddies behind the plate f.
