Seating - cushions, securing in position. -The rear edge of a seat cushion 2 engages beneath a projection 6 on a back cushion 1 and is held against forward movement by permanent or detachable fastenings 4 or by a ledge at the front of the seat. Limp cushions may be reinforced by transverse bars 7, and when arm rests are used these are detachably fitted and pass through holes in the seat cushions. According to the Provisional Specification the rear edge of the seat cushion and lower edge of the back cushion may be hingedly connected by sewing together extensions of the covering material or by means of a strip of fabric.

Spring surfaces.-The frame of a seat-back or cushion, for use in railway and other vehicles, consists of angle iron of inverted channel section with inwardly-projecting horizontal flanges which, in the case of the longitudinal sides, support spaced transverse bearers for the spring, and in the case of the ends supports the springs directly. The transverse bearers 7 each support a ,single row of springs and the flanges of the frame ends which carry the end rows of springs are stiffened by downturned lips 6. Within the inverted channel of the frame are secured timbers 3 to which the upholstery is attached. When used as a seat back, arm rests A formed of channel iron 11 are secured to plates 10 which bridge adjacent spring bearers. Dowel plates 13 on the underside of the seat cushion are provided to engage positioning dowels on the frame.

Cushions; mattresses. - A seat back cushion which may be used as a mattress has a hinged flap movable to give in one position increased thickness along its lower end for use as a back cushion and in the other position to provide a level surface for sleeping purposes. The flap 8 is secured by a hinge strip 12 mounted therein and lying within the outer cover of the main cushion 3, which strip 12 is stitched at its inner end to the fabric covering an underlaying bed of upholstery springs 2. The main cushion comprises three parts 3 - - 5, of which the central part 4 is loosely stuffed in order that it may allow the flap to assume a horizontal position when the device is used as a mattress.

Helical springs.-To prevent rust and ensure noiselessness in helical wire springs for mattresses, cushions, seats, &c., the wire is coated with a liquid of a varnish or paint-like nature and subsequently covered with fabric. A number of such helical springs may be placed individually in compartments formed in a mattress. The coated wire may be covered with a woven or plaited fabric similar to that described in Specification 27,457/08, while the liquid coating is still viscous. White hard varnish mixed with methylated spirit may be used for the coating.

[Class 52 (ii)] Frames for vehicle seats are built up from frame members having shaped cores of plywood with sheet metal sheathing extending over one face of the core and embracing the core at the edges. The end members A, B include thin flat cores cut from sheet plywood to the shapes shown and sheathed in sheet metal which is turned over the edges of the core as at 15. A part 17 of the edge of the sheathing is not turned over, and an extension 20 of the sheathing is provided to complete the front leg. Wooden cross-bars E, F are bolted to turned-in flanges or sockets formed on, or to brackets welded to the sheathing of the end members. L-section metal bar D is also welded to the sheathing. The upper bar C of the back is formed of a core of plywood with a sheathing of metal, the ends of which are welded to the sheathing of the end frames.
