    • 962,350. Driving means for sifting apparatus. J. E. BAKER, and E. C. SCHROEDER. Sept. 18, 1961, No. 33396/61. Heading B2H. A sifting apparatus comprises a frame 1, a carrier 2 for sifting elements, disposed within the frame, crank-shafts 39 having main shaft portions 40 journalled one at each end of the frame to rotate on fixed vertical axes in bearings 45, 46, the main shaft portions 40 each having end shaft portions 41, 42 which are parallel to and offset from the respective main shaft portions 40, the end shaft portions being in vertical alignment, brackets 26, 27 and 28, 29 projecting from the carrier and journalled to the corresponding end shaft portions 41, 42 to support the carrier 2 for horizontal gyration in the frame 1 as the end shaft portions rotate around the main shaft portions 40, arms 65, 66 extending from the two corresponding end shaft portions 41, and pivotally connected one to each end of a tie bar 64 to rotate one of the crank-shafts 39 from the other, a counterbalance means e.g. weight buckets 76 carried by each of the main shaft portions 40 to balance thrusts imparted by the gyration of the carrier 2 and an electric motor 5 to rotate the said other end of the crank-shafts, through a pulley 85 and a belt 86. The main and end shaft portions 40 and 41, 42 respectively overlap and are held in position by clamps comprising two blocks 50, with grooves for the shaft portions, held together by bolts 56. The main and end shaft portions have grooves 60, 59 respectively, which engage the corresponding bolt 56 and position the end shaft portions correctly. The arms 65, 66 are clamped to the end shaft portions 41 and each carry a bearing with a wrist pin 74 to connect with the tie bar 64. The tie bar 64 may be passed alternatively underneath the carrier 2 between the end shaft portions 42. The weight buckets 76 are welded to the main shaft portions 40 at 180 degrees with respect to the angular disposition of the end shaft portions 41, 42 relative to the respective main shaft portion and disc-shaped weights 89 are disposed inside the buckets near to the bearings 45, 46 and spaced apart by light spacing discs 90. The frame 1 also carries guards 19.

    • 16,214. Baker, Ltd., F. E., and Baker, F. E. July 11. Cams. - Antifriction rollers f are mounted directly, without the use of pivot pins, in partcylindrical recesses in cam - operated levers or rods &c., such as the valve - operating levers or rods of internal-combustion engines for motorcycles &c. To prevent axial displacement, a flange g in the recess engages a groove in the roller, the roller being provided with a washer j secured by a bolt and nut or a rivet pin h, which may be formed as shown in Fig. 5, or may be integral with the washer, the opposite end being riveted or provided with a screw nut. In a modification, the flange g is formed in the central plane of the recess and roller. The part-cylindrical recess may enclose more than half the roller, in which case the rollers formed as indicated above are inserted from the side. Where the recess does not enclose a diameter of the roller, the roller, formed in one piece with a groove, is inserted straight into the recess, but in this case is only retained therein by the pressure of the cam &c. In the valve-gear shown in Fig. 1, the valve stems d rest on levers a, b provided with rollers f and actuated by cams e, the transverse supporting ends c of the lever b being formed so that the two valve stems may be arranged in the same vertical plane passing through the lever a.
