摘要： A water heating system includes a burner assembly for providing a source of thermal energy to a heat exchanger. A water inlet conduit is coupled to the heat exchanger assembly for supplying fresh water to be heated, and a water exit conduit is coupled to the heat exchanger assembly for delivering the heated water to a point of use. A bypass conduit connects the water exit conduit to the water inlet conduit, and a pump disposed in the bypass conduit circulates at least a portion of the heated water from the water exit conduit to the water inlet conduit. A feed-forward sensor positioned in the water inlet conduit between the heat exchanger assembly and the bypass conduit monitors a parameter of the water entering the heat exchanger assembly, and a processor controls the operation of the of the burner assembly in response to the feed-forward sensor.

摘要： A polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel ceil power plant is cooled evaporatively with a water coolant system which does not permit liquid water to exit or flow through the coolant system. The coolant system utilizes a hydrophobic porous member (28) for venting gases such as fuel and/or air from a coolant water flow field in the system. Coolant water (36) is prevented from continuosly contacting the porous member during operation of the power plant thus preventing blockage of the porous member by coolant water or contaminants disposed in the coolant water.

摘要： An orifice modifier which can be added to a frozen confection-dispensing outlet (14) and which can impart, ideally without human intervention, a desired shape to the dispensed product. In a preferred embodiment, the orifice modifier is, or includes, a disk (22) which imposes a shape on the dispensing orifice (16) whereby to produce a product with a desirable pattern. In a particularly preferred embodiment, a mechanism is provided (50, 52, 54) for moving the disk (22) or other orifice modifier while the product is being dispensed. It has been found that if the disk (22) is, for example, rotated during dispensing of the product, an especially esthetically pleasing pattern is formed in the emerging ice cream. Such patterns can be captured for the final product by refrigeration.

摘要： A method for controlling an amount of a liquid electrolyte in a polymer- electrolyte membrane of a fuel cell is provided. The method comprises enriching one or more of a fuel flow and an air flow with a vapor of the liquid electrolyte, the liquid electrolyte being unreplenishable via an electrochemical reaction of the fuel cell. The method further comprises delivering the vapor of the liquid electrolyte to the fuel cell including the polymer-electrolyte membrane via one or more of the gas-permeable anode and or the gas-permeable cathode. In this manner, loss of liquid electrolyte from the PEM membrane of the fuel cell can be reduced, leading to improved fuel- cell endurance.

摘要： A blower generates an airflow across a condenser used in a fuel cell. A water flow field includes an absorbing device for receiving excess water from the water flow field. The absorbing device is arranged to receive the airflow for producing water vapor and removing the excess water. In one example, the absorbing device is a wick that becomes submersed in an accumulator's water when excess water has collected. The hot airflow from the condenser blows across the wick to evaporate the water and expel it from the fuel cell as vapor.

摘要： A fuel cell power plant (20) includes a variable resistive device (30). In one example, the variable resistive device (30) is operationally associated directly with a cell stack assembly (22). The controller (32) selectively varies an electrical resistance of the variable resistive device (30) responsive to an operating condition of the power plant (20). By using a variable resistive device, a variety of control functions are possible to address various operating conditions of the power plant (20) or the cell stack assembly (22).
