A system of master and subsidiary clocks is periodically corrected by a wireless time signal composed of a combination of impulses. The correction means is associated with signal analysing means which responds to a time correction signal and detector means determines the character and extent of the master clock deviation so that the master clock temporarily drives the subsidiary clocks slower or faster until they are corrected. In one example the master clock is driven by a synchronous motor and correction is effected by changing the rate of impulses from the master clock to the subsidiary clocks, the master clock itself being corrected by a heart shaped cam mechanism. The signal analyser includes a pawl and ratchet mechanism driven by the impulses. In another example an auxiliary synchronous motor regulates the speed of the main synchronous motor driving the master clock and a generator picks up the speed of the main synchronous motor and drives the synchronous motors of the subsidiary clocks.

A quartz clock is adjusted by varying a D.C. regulator voltage applied to the oscillator crystal (GT cut). The oscillator frequency # is first converted to pulses of recurrence frequency f rich in harmonics and compared with a transmitted standard frequency F=nf in a radio receiver tuned to F, until any beats on its tuning indicator are eliminated by adjusting a voltage regulator controlling the D.C. voltage on the oscillator crystal and hence its frequency. Alternatively a phase discriminator may automatically control the crystal voltage. The clock synchronous motor 9 is driven through a frequency divider 7 from the oscillator. The oscillator may be thermostatically controlled. The clock may be portable and use transistors.

[Also in Division H3] An oscillator drives through a synchronous motor 10 and gearing one side 15 of a differential gear, the other side 4 being driven at constant speed, controlled by a balance wheel or pendulum escapement 1, so that any error in oscillator frequency or motor speed varies the angular position of the differential gear planet wheel 16 and through a ferro-magnetic link 18 the magnetic reluctance of an inductor core 19 determining the oscillator frequency, to correct its frequency. Alternatively the LC oscillator tuned circuit capacitance can be controlled, or the resistance or capacitance of an RC oscillator. The motor 10 also winds up a coil spring 7 driving the constant speed side of the differential gear, and as both drives to the latter from the motor have equal transmission ratios the spring 7 acts also as a clutch. Different frequencies and speeds may be stabilized, by adjusting a regulator arm 2 of the escapement. The motor 10 may drive the hands of a clock or, through cams, produce master pulses controlling distant clocks.
