    • 559,693. Plaster bandages. SMITH & NEPHEW, Ltd., T. J., and BURLEY, D. W. Aug. 25, 1942, No. 11947. [Class 81 (ii)] A plaster bandage for surgical purposes is prepared from a paste of unburnt gypsum, an absorptive material, an adhesive and water, the paste being spread on a carrier of textile fabric &c. and subjected to heat in an oven to convert the gypsum to plaster of Paris. Suitable absorptive materials are activated charcoal, kaolin, fullers earth and magenisum trisilicate. The adhesive is soluble or swellable in water e.g. dextrine, gelatine, gum acacia, gum tragacanth or certain cellulose ethers. The rate of travel of the paste-coated fabric through the oven and the temperature thecrof may be varied to produce a plaster which, after wetting, will set in from five to ten minutes. The inlet temperature of the oven is preferably 180‹-250‹ C. and the outlet temperature 120‹-140‹ C. In an example 12¢ parts by weight of fullers earth were added to 87¢ parts of unburnt gypsum and mixed to a dough with water. Then ¢ to 5 parts of dextrine, mixed with water to form a jelly, was added to the dough and further water added to give a paste of the required consistency. Specification 483,636 is referred to.

    • 547,305. Tampon introducers; pencil and like holders. SMITH & NEPHEW, Ltd., T. J., ANDERTON, E., and BURLEY, D. W. July 4, 1941, No. 8494. [Class 81 (ii)] A device for introducing catamenial tampons comprises a tube of paper &c. having one or more slits or slots extending from one open end into which the tampori is inserted and held by a sleeve which is slid frictionally on the tube and moved over the slits or slots at the open end; after the tampon has been introduced the sleeve is slid away from the end holding the tampon to release it, the device then being withdrawn to leave the tampon in position. As shown the tube 5 is of circular cross-section and has a single slot 6 extending part of the length of the tube from the end holding the tampon 8 which is clamped therein by the sleeve 7; an internal ridge 9 limits the insertion of the tampon in the tube. The slot or slots may extend the whole length of the tube in which case a second sleeve, which may be secured to the tube, is positioned at the end opposite that holding the tampon. The tube and sleeve may be tapered. In another form the device comprises two or more concentric tubes the parts between the slots of one tube covering the slots of the adjacent tube.
