    • 1532998 Feeding slides and carriages DEAN SMITH & GRACE Ltd 21 May 1976 [27 May 1975] 23176/75 Headings B3B and B3T In a machine tool in which a movable component, e.g. a slide on a lathe, has a slow hand feed drive and a selectively operable fast power drive means, the slow feed drive means comprises a rotatable hand wheel 2 which rotates a drive sleeve 8 mounted on a support sleeve 10, the sleeves 8, 10 being in driving connection by means of teeth 14, 16 to rotate a spindle 12, and wherein to select the fast power drive means the hand wheel 2 and drive sleeve 8 are slid along the support sleeve 10 to disengage the teeth 14, 16 and engage further teeth 32 with rack teeth 34 on a linearly movable rack member having a switch actuating finger 44 which actuates, e.g. a switch 52, to start up power drive means. The spindle 12 is drivingly connected to a feed screw for moving the said component, and the power drive means is drivingly connectable to this feed screw. The rack member can be moved in either direction by the hand wheel 2 to actuate one of a pair of said switches to selectively engage a forward or reverse drive.

    • 1,217,060. Screw-cutting. DEAN SMITH & GRACE Ltd. 19 Aug., 1969 [24 Dec., 1968], No. 61350/68. Heading B3T. Apparatus for use in screw-cutting on lathes comprises a gear 1 engageable with the lathe lead screw A, a first dial 6 rotatable with the gear 1 whereby one rotation of the dial represents a first matching length of the lead screw and a second dial 8 connected to the gear 1 through a reduction gear transmission 2, 32, and 4 whereby one rotation of the second dial represents a second matching length of the lead screw which is greater than the first matching length. A matching length is defined as a length of the lead screw equal to the pitch of the leadscrew multiplied by the number of teeth in the gear. The dials are numbered, the numbers co-operating with respective datum points on the apron to facilitate the precise engagement of the lead screw not to ensure the accurate engagement of the cutting tool in the desired thread form.
