Acetylene.-The generator comprises a lower carbide compartment A and an upper water reservoir B, from the latter of which water is supplied to the carbide, in regulated quantity, through a needle valve F. In order to prevent the shaking down of an undue quantity of water owing to the movements to which the apparatus may be subjected, a central tube E is provided, which communicates with the reservoir through an opening J ; this tube is closed at the top, and is fitted with a partition H, formed with elongated openings H so as to produce a dash-pot effect. Any excess of gas which may be generated escapes through a bent tube O and outlet S ; the tube O dips into a well W, and its bend is situated outside the cover of the apparatus and is formed to produce a water trap. The drying-chamber K, containing calcium carbide M, extends through the water reservoir, and serves also to cool the gas.

    • 6858. Bishop, D. W. March 20. Acetylene. - The generator comprises a lower carbide compartment A and an upper water reservoir B, from the latter of which water is supplied to the carbide through a needle valve F. In order to prevent the generation of gas from being affected by any violent movements of the apparatus, a valve chamber is provided, consisting of a central tube E, which communicates with the water reservoir through the opening J and is fitted with a perforated partition H. This chamber is closed at the top, so that the upper part of it forms an air cushion. The gas pressure in the compartment A is communicated to the surface of the water in the reservoir B through a bent tube O, so as to admit of a smaller valve opening being used. Excess of pressure is relieved by a sensitive spring valve T, applied to an opening in the cover of the water reservoir. The drying-chamber K containing carbide M passes through the water reservoir.
