    • 254,528. White, S. D., and Penwarden, E. H. July 21, 1925. Ceiling and like overhead lamps.-In an overhead lamp for lighting buildings, promenades, &c., light from electric lamp bulbs is transmitted through the sides of the lamp body and light from one or more additional bulbs is directed through the bottom of the lamp body by one or more reflectors. In one form, the lamp body comprises a glazed octagonal part 2 surmounted bv a pyramidal part 3 glazed in some cases, the bottom of the lamp being open, or preferably closed by a glazed door 12 hinged to a bottom ring 13. A reflector 8 is supported on brackets 17 on the ring 13 and encloses a lamp bulb adjustably mounted by means of a stem and a thumb-nut. Other lamp bulbs 19 are arranged outside and preferably above the reflector 8, the outer surface of which may also be reflecting. In a second form, the lamp bulbs 25. Fig. 2, for downward illumination are arranged within hemispherical reflectors 24 carried by plates 23, and the upper bulbs are provided with a separate reflector 21, an additional lamp bulb 26 being provided for use when the bulbs 25 are not required.

    • 242,071. White, S. D., and Kramer, J. B. Oct. 30, 1924. Magnetic separators.-In a magnetic separator for extracting magnetic material from fluid material such as clay slip, of the kind in which the separation is effected by two sets of combs or finger-like projections connected to the poles of an electromagnet, the combs 1, 2, having flat teeth of angular or L-shape are pivotally mounted at 3, 4 on the casing a containing the electromagnet and are connected to the poles of the latter. The combs 1, 2 are moved to produce, in the working position as shown in Fig. 2, a tapered or V-shaped space between their adjacent edges, the width of the space being proportional to the taper of the teeth so as to produce a uniform field between the latter, or separated, as in Fig. 1, for the purposes of cleaning the teeth. The combs 1, 2 are also arranged so that the respective teeth are in staggered relation to each other. To stop the supply of clap slip if the current fails, a part of the trough along which the slip is fed is separately mounted and is held in the closed position by a solenoid or another electromagnet, and when the current fails this part of the trough drops, the slip being delivered into a receptacle and not passed on to the combs 1, 2. A visual or aural signal may also be operated at the same time.
