    • 988,200. Bearings. D. U. HUNTER. April 3, 1963 [April 11, 1962], No. 13218/63. Heading F2A. A bearing to permit radial deflection of a shaft 10 comprises a sleeve 13 mounted for rotation within the bearing wall 25 and disposed in spaced relation to the shaft, means 15 sealing the space 14 between the sleeve and the shaft, means 19 . . . 23 forming a driving connection between the sleeve and shaft while permitting radial deflection of the shaft, means 26 biasing the shaft towards concentric relation with the sleeve, and a viscous material in the space 14 whereby the shaft may seek a self-balancing position when rotating above critical speed. Coil springs or undulating springs may constitute the biasing means 26 and the viscous material may be 100,000 centistokes silicone fluid. Ring members 19 having lugs to engage recesses in the sleeve and shaft form the driving connection. The sleeve may form the inner race of a ball or roller bearing or have opposite ends supported by a ball and a roller bearing in an exhaust-driven centrifugal turbocharger. The radial clearance provided by the space 14 may be between 2 and 5 thousandths of an inch.
