    • A preparative method of isolating a preselected whey protein or group of whey proteins from a solution is provided. The method comprises the following steps: (a) contacting a whey protein solution with the preselected ion exchanger for a time and at a temperature sufficient to enable the preselected whey protein to be adsorbed; wherein the whey protein solution has (1) a protein content in the range of about 5% to about 20% by weight, (2) a pH of a preselected level, which is the level at which the preselected whey protein or group of whey proteins selectively binds to the preselected ion exchanger, and (3) a reduced ionic strength; and (b) recovering either or both of the following: (1) the whey protein component adsorbed in step (a), and (2) the breakthrough whey protein component not adsorbed in step (a). It is preferred that the whey protein solution is a retentate obtained via ultrafiltration of whey, having reduced ionic strength, or a whey protein concentrate powder which has been reconstituted with water.

    • The invention provides a fastener which somewhat resembles a slide fastener but which can be made at least substantially fluid-resistant. It comprises a first component (1), of flexible and resilient material, having an engagement formation having a longitudinal groove (6) and longitudinally spaced mating formations (10), and a second component (2), of similar material, having a rib (16) and longitudinally spaced mating formations (19). The components can be progressively engaged by the introduction of the rib into the groove and the interengagement of the mating formations. The latter prevent significant relative longitudinal movement between the components. Each component can be made by extrusion of a blank followed by the formation of the mating formations by a rotary die (123). The components can be engaged and disengaged by means of a slide (52) like that used in a conventional slide fastener. To prevent the inadvertent disengagement of the components, the component may have longitudinal retaining or locking formations (7,17) and/or interlocking mating formations (10,19). Numerous other examples are illustrated.

    • A back-pack comprises a load-carrier (1) and a waist fitment (2) which can be secured around a user's waist. The load-carrier is attached to the waist fitment in such a manner that its height can be adjusted relative to the waist fitment. To this end the load-carrier is provided with rails (8) which extend through clamps (22) on the waist fitment; this locates the load-carrier relative to the waist fitment but enables it to be moved vertically relative to the waist fitment. Clamping straps (12) made from relatively rough textile material are attached at their ends to the load-carrier and extend adjacent to the rails. The clamping straps also extend through the clamps. Each of the clamps can be moved between clamping state, in which it grips the clamping strap to prevent adjustment of the load-carrier relative to the waist fitment, and a release state in which it does not so act. The anchorage for shoulder straps (3) of the back-pack may be made adjustable in a similar manner.
