    • A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), supporting two operation modes local monitoring and remote monitoring. The apparatus includes a PLB that supports the present operation mode, as well as a local monitoring mode, employing the same transmitter, and automatically switching between modes. Upon activation, the PLB first tries to communicate with a local monitoring station, at a low transmission power, and at a high repetition rate, in purpose of dealing with the PLB call locally, without involving the remote monitoring station. Then, if not acknowledged by a local monitoring station, the PLB increases its transmission power, enabling access to a remote monitoring station. In a preferred embodiment, the PLB is carried by a person onboard a vessel, to alarm upon a Man Overboard (MOB) accident, the local monitoring station is installed onboard the same vessel, and the remote monitoring station is part of a satellite Search and Rescue (SAR) system, as Cospas-Sarsat.

    • The present invention discloses a portable personal communication device with an extendable helical antenna. This helical antenna is made of an elastic conductive spring, configured to change its height over a ground plane and along the antenna axis, mainly having two positions: a stowed position where the antenna is pressed down between the ground plane and a rigid cover, achieving a low profile; and an operational position where the rigid cover is removed and the antenna is extended by its own spring force, to a higher height, improving antenna gain. Normally, a second planar antenna may be placed over the same ground plane, not exceeding the footprint of the helical antenna, thus utilizing a compactly small volume and yet achieving a considerable electromagnetic decoupling between the antennas, due to their different radiation patterns. According to one embodiment, these antennas are installed in a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) for Search and Rescue (SAR) of people in distress, where the planar antenna is coupled to a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS, such as GPS) receiver, and the helical antenna is coupled to a VHF/UHF radio.

    • A modulation method, applicable for augmentation of present art modulated signals. The method, for communicating data from a transmitter to a receiver, is based on periodical burst transmissions, set at a nominal timing, of signals which are either pure carriers or already modulated by data (e.g. ASK, FSK, PSK). Knowing the transmission timing and assessing the propagation delay, the receiver can estimate the nominal reception timing of these periodical transmissions. Modifying the nominal timing of a transmission, by a specific time period, is used to communicate a symbol between the transmitter and the receiver, according to a predefined encoding table which associates between a symbol and a unique time period. According to one embodiment of the invention, the transmitter is a distress radio beacon, configured to report its position upon activation, in periodical data burst transmissions, to ground stations through satellites. The present method is used to augment this report, complying with the present beacon specifications, yet providing a finer resolution of the reported coordinates. According to one embodiment, the position resolution is improved approximately from 125 to 8 meters.
