    • A zero clearance fireplace (10) of the type to be installed inside of a building against or near an outside wall (66) is provided. The box shaped fireplace is provided with four substantially vertical walls, a top wall and a bottom wall. The bottom wall comprises an inner plenum (34A) and an outer plenum (38) below the combustion chamber. The rear wall comprises an outer plenum (38) connected to the bottom plenum of the bottom wall, a middle plenum (34) connected to a source of fresh air and connected to the inner plenum of the bottom wall and an inner plenum (31) which is connected to a horizontal exhaust pipe (18) which is inserted through the outside wall and is connected to the combustion chamber through a baffle arrangement (65).

    • 431,481. Ventilating mines. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., 24, Buckingham Gate, London.-(Lindsay, D. C. ; c/o Thompson & Co., Ltd., Johannesburg, South Africa) Jan. 11, 1934, No. 1134. [Class 137] A method of cooling and conditioning air in deep mines consists in discharging air so treated in one of lower levels of the mine into working passages at this level, and then passing it through passages at a higher level where it is mixed with air freshly conditioned at that level. The main, or downcast shaft 5 passes parallel to but beneath the gold bearing reef 6. Footwall drives 7a, 7 , 7 extend at right angles from the shaft 5, and cross cuts 8 , 8 and 8 extend into the reef. Various stopes 10 , 10 , 10 follow the reef from one reef drive 9 , 9 , 9 to another, the reef being honeycombed with stopes, the workings being in the form of an arrowhead pointing downwards. Air is drawn from the surface through shaft 5 into the lowest footwall drive, and is conditioned in a unit 11 in chamber 12 in cross cut 8 . A fan 14 draws air from shaft 5 through drives 7 , 8 and a portion passes through the conditioner and a portion is byepassed by damper 13 , its condition being thus controlled. The fan blows the air into reef drive 9 and upwards through stopes 10 , leading by stopes 10 , 10 , &c. to the surface, the space increasing at each higher succeeding level. To meet the increased requirements, a conditioner 11 is operated at the next level, drawing fresh air from shaft 5 through drive 7b and cross-cut 8 , this conditioned air being added to that from the lower level. A further conditioner 11 is shown operating in a similar manner. Thermostats 15 , 15 and 15 may be used to control the air temperature of the corresponding units. A part of the air from stopes 10 may be led through tunnel 16a into chamber 12b where it will be conditioned, mixed with untreated air from shaft 5, and discharged into reef drive 9 and stopes 10 . If desired, a mixture of air from any of the stopes with air from shaft 5 may be conditioned and passed into the shaft drives. It may be desirable to condition only re-circulated air, and allow fresh air to enter by infiltration or otherwise.
