    • A block-cipher cryptographic device that processes plaintext/encrypted input data with a key signal to provide encrypted/decrypoted output data. Such device includes a shift register for receiving input data; and data processing means for executing the following data processing routine a selected number of cycles to provide output data: processing the contents of said shift register with a key signal to provide initially processed data; initializing a pseudorandom nonlinear sequence generator with the initially processed data; running the pseudorandom nonlinear sequence generator to generate a keystream; segregating portions of the keystream; processing said segregated portions of said keystream with a portion of the data in the shift register to provide a block of processed data; and shifting said block of processed data into the shift register. To further increase the randomness of the pseudorandom keystream generator, and hence the encryption security, the processing means segretates the keystream in accordance with a routine wherein the beginning of said segregated portion is provided at a time related to the beginning of the keystream in response to a duration indication; segregates every nth bit of the keystream from said beginning of said segregated portion for a selected number of segregated bits in response to a frequency indication; and provides said initially processed data by first processing said shift register contents and said key signal and then rotating data produced by said first processing in response to a rotation indication. The duration indication, the frequency indication and the rotation indication are each separately provided for each of the cycles and may be different for each of the cycles.

    • A control system and a corresponding method for controlling descrambling within a plurality of jurisdictions of scrambled programs broadcast from at least one of said jurisdictions. In order to enable a given jurisdiction to also regulate the export of scrambled programs by controlling the authorization of descramblers located in other jurisdictions for descrambling of programs broadcast from the given jurisdiction, the broadcast system includes means for also broadcasting a jurisdiction indication signal indicating the jurisdictions in which descrambling of the broadcast scrambled program is authorized; and the descramblers include means for processing the jurisdiction indication signal and for enabling descrambling of said predetermined program only when the jurisdiction indication signal indicates that descrambling of said program is authorized in the jurisdiction in which the descramblers are located.

    • A distribution control system for controlling the distribution of scrambled impulse pay per view (IPPV) programming from a plurality of different IPPV programmers to a plurality of descramblers. The system includes a plurality of business data processing systems, a plurality of channel control systems respectively related to a plurality of the given IPPV programmers and an IPPV management system. The business data processing systems process view history data identifying descrambled IPPV programs and credit data for individual descramblers and cost data for IPPV programs provided by given IPPV programmers and provide credit data and IPPV authorization data pertaining to individual descramblers. Each of the channel control systems provides descrambler messages containing identification, cost and IPPV status data for individual IPPV programs. The IPPV data management system processes the credit data and IPPV authorization data provided by the business data processing systems to provide descrambler messages unique to each descrambler containing credit data and IPPV authorization data pertaining to the individual descrambler. The IPPV management system also sorts the IPPV program identification and cost data provided the channel control systems in accordance with which business data processing systems process data for those IPPV programs provided by the respective given IPPV programmers, and sorts view history data provided by the descramblers in accordance with which business data processing systems process data for the respective descramblers for the IPPV programmers that provide the IPPV programs identified in the view history data provided by the respective descramblers; and forwards the sorted IPPV program identification and cost data and the sorted view history data to the respective business data processing systems.

    • A receiver interface system for enabling an operator to access different types of services in a like manner, wherein the services contain different combinations of service components received by a receiver in different portions of one or more different frequency channels, such as television channels. The service definition table may include means for defining access to different service components located in the same portion of a given frequency channel at different times and/or may define access to different service components located in the following portions of the given frequency channel with respect to a television signal received over the given frequency channel: the video information interval, the horizontal blanking interval, the vertical blanking interval and the subcarrier of the given frequency.

    • An elementary two-stream transport multiplexer provides for the addition of services contained in a transport stream to a pre-existing transport stream. The elementary multiplexer includes a pair of transport demultiplexers, a processor and a transport remultiplexer. The demultiplexers demultiplex a pair of input transport streams to their constituent service components and service control information tables. The service control information tables are routed to the processor which combines and reconfigures the information within the tables to provide a single set of output service control information tables. The demultiplexers filter the service components based on the output service control tables. The transport remultiplexer multiplexes the output tables with the filtered streams to provide an output transport stream.

    • A key security system provides for the reproduction of secure keys by using distributed key generation data and a distributed encrypted prekey. The system encrypts program key generation data with a program key prekey in accordance with a first encryption algorithm to produce the program key; processes the program key to produce a keystream; and processes an information signal with the keystream to produce a scrambled information signal. The program key prekey is encrypted with a category key in accordance with a second encryption algorithm to produce an encrypted program key prekey. The scrambled information signal, the program key generation data and the encrypted program key prekey are distributed to descramblers. The descrambler within the key security system decrypts the distributed encrypted program key prekey with the category key in accordance with the second encryption algorithm to reproduce the program key prekey; encrypts the distributed program key generation data with the reproduced program key prekey in accordance with the first encryption algorithm to produce the program key; processes the reproduced program key to reproduce the keystream; and processes the distributed scrambled information signal with the reproduced keystream to descramble the distributed scrambled information signal. The key generation data incudes authorization data that must be processed by the authorization processor in the descrambler in order to enable the descrambler. The use of authorization data as key generation data protects the authorization data from spoofing attacks. When more data must be protected than a single operation of the encryption algorithm can support, then additional data blocks are protected by chaining the system, wherein the output from one stage forms part of the input to the next. The key generation data for the program key includes a sequence number securely associated with the category key to thereby "timelock" program key reproduction to the use of a current category key and thus prevent an attack based upon the use of an obsolete category key.
