    • A jig (10; Fig 1) having a pair of lower support rails (12; Fig 3) spaced apart to form a lower guide gap, a pair of upper rails 14 spaced apart to form an upper guide gap 15, the upper rails provided opposite to and spaced apart from the lower support rails to form a feed opening between the upper and lower rails. A flexible cutting member 17 is anchored at a first end 28 of the lower guide gap and extending into the lower guide gap at least at the first end and extending to an opposite second end of the lower guide gap, a tension applicator 18 associated with a second end of the cutting member is used to apply tension to the cutting member. In use, an operator feeds a rigid insulation board through the feed opening 16, positions the board relative to the guide gaps, and then cuts the board by moving the tension applicator in order to pass the cutting member through the board. The tension applicator may be a handle. The cutting member may be formed from wire.

    • A plastisol composition for use in the moulding of shoe soles comprises polyvinyl chloride 57,7, dicapryl phthalate 27,4, aromatic oil 9,6, white lead paste 2,4, and a 1:1 dispersion of SRF Black in dicapryl phthalate 2,8 parts by weight. The insole and the inturned margin of the upper may be coated with a primer comprising butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer rubber 100, hydrated amorphous silica 10, maleic anhydride vinyl chloride/acetate terpolymer 100, and natural rosin 20 parts by weight, together with methyl ethyl ketone in quantity sufficient to dissolve the polymers and give a primer of appropriate viscosity. Specification 859,671 is referred to.ALSO:A blank of gelled thermoplastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, is heated to render it mouldable, positioned in an unheated mould of a press (such as that described in Specification 859,671) forced while still hot into engagement with a shoe bottom in order to mould the blank against the shoe bottom to form a sole and heel unit of a required shape and to cause it to adhere to the shoe bottom, and the shoe finally removed after the plastic material has cooled to a shape-retaining condition. The blank comprises a plane upper surface and a smoothly rounded, highly polished, blemish free surface extending over its side and lower portions and is made by pouring plastisol, comprising 57,7 to 62,5% by weight of polyvinyl chloride and up to about 10% by weight of a non-plasticizer as an extender dispersed in a plasticizer, into a highly polished, blemish free mould, and then gelling by heating to between 170 DEG and 185 DEG C. before positioning in the press mould.

    • 2-Mercapto-6-methyldihydropyrimidines, of the general formula (or tautomeric forms thereof), wherein R represents alkyl and X an aryl, arylamino or substituted aryl radical, are manufactured by reacting an aromatic primary amine or a monoarylhydrazine with ammonium thiocyanate and a b -hydroxy-b -methyl ketone The reaction is conveniently carried out in aqueous acidic solution, e.g. by adding concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid slowly to a mixture of the other reagents containing water and the raising to whole to boiling point for a few minutes. Starting materials specified are: aniline, o- and p-chloraniline, p-nitraniline, 2 : 5-dichloraniline, p-aminophenol, anthranilic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid, sulphanilamide, p-phenylenediamine, benzidine, b -naphthylamine, p-toluidine, dehydrothio-p-toluidine and phenylhydrazine; diacetone alcohol and 5-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-heptanone. Examples describe the interaction of certain of these compounds, the diamines being stated to yield bis-pyrimidino compounds. The Provisional Specification comprises also the manufacture of compounds of the general formula above wheren, when R represents methyl, X may also represent hydrogen, an aliphatic or alicyclic radical, a free amino group, or a substituted amino group other than arylamino, by replacing the aromatic primary amine or arylhydrazine by other amines, including ammonia, or hydrazines, including hydrazine itself, or, when X=H, by simply heating ammonium thiocyanate with excess of diacetone alcohol.

    • Polyisobutylene and coumarone resin may be added to the extender in rubber compositions consisting of the product obtained by vulcanizing unvulcanized natural rubber which has been depolymerized by heating to 200-300 DEG C. The natural rubber is preferably premasticated with a processing aid such as a peroxide or mercapto-benzthiazole and then vulcanization effected by sulphur or sulphur chloride after adding a mineral oil of relatively high aromaticity, or a tar, pitch, bitumen, wax, animal or mineral oil such as linseed or rape oil. In examples the mixes are vulcanized in the presence of dicyclohexylamine.ALSO:An extender which may be added to a rubber composition before vulcanization consists of the product obtained by vulcanizing unvulcanized natural rubber which has been depolymerised by heating to 200-300 DEG C. • Extreme pressure lubricants comprise mineral oils having incorporated therein sulphurized esters obtained by reacting sulphur with unsaturated esters of mono- or di-hydric aliphatic alcohols with naturally occurring fatty acids having from 16 to 24 carbon atoms, the alcohol and/or acid radicals being unsaturated, in the presence of a secondary amine of the aliphatic, alicyclic or reduced heterocyclic series (see Group IV (b)). Examples describe as additives the sulphurized glycol, allyl and oleyl esters of rape seed acids, sperm oil and triethylene glycol and ethyl esters of soya fatty acids, dicyclohexylamine being used as activator in their preparation. Specification 588,353 is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes as additives, the products obtained by reacting sulphur with the mono- or di-hydric alcohol esters of naturally-occurring unsaturated aliphatic acids having 18 to 24 carbon atoms, preferably in presence of the above-mentioned activators.ALSO:Sulphurized esters are prepared by reacting sulphur with unsaturated esters of mono- or di-hydric aliphatic alcohols with the naturally occurring fatty acids containing 16 to 24 carbon atoms, in the presence of secondary amines of the aliphatic alicyclic or reduced heterocyclic series as activators. The alcohols and/or the acids may be unsaturated. At least 12 1/2 per cent by weight of sulphur may be used. The reaction is generally carried out at from 130 DEG to 180 DEG C. The products are extreme pressure additives for use in lubricating oils (see Group III) and have the same properties as the sulphurised glycerides described in Specification 588,353, [Group III]. In examples, sulphurised products are prepared from the glycol, allyl and oleyl esters of rape seed acids, sperm oil, and the triethylene glycol and ethyl esters of soya fatty acids, using dicyclohexylamine as the activator in each case. According to the Provisional Specification, liquid sulphurized products may be prepared by reacting sulphur with mono- and di-hydric alcohol esters of naturally occurring unsaturated aliphatic acids having 18-24 carbon atoms, preferably in presence of the above-mentioned applicators.
