[Class 132 (iii)] A dart board comprises a metal tube A fixed in a background B, strips of metal C fixed to the background and welded or interlocked with the tube A and separate pieces of wood or cork F fitted between the strips C. The pieces F are inlaid with short strips of metal D which may go through to the background B or only part of the way in which latter case a small strip of metal E is put underneath. The edges of the metal strips are rounded to simulate wire. The bull's-eye is formed by a small piece of tube G inlaid in a centre piece of wood or cork. According to the Provisional Specification the pieces F may be screwed to the background or made to interlock with the metal frame.

Distilling plant; film evaporators.-In concentrating or distilling liquids such as fermented products, fruit juices, sugar solutions, &c., and in separating salt &c. from solutions, a gaseous medium is maintained in continuous circulation over the liquid and through a condenser. The liquid is supplied through an inlet 25 to the lower of the drums 1, 2, through which a gas such as air, carbon dioxide, &c. is circulated by fans 30, 30 . The lower drum 1 contains a rotary shaft 6 carrying connected coiled tubes 10 through which water or other liquid is drawn by a pump 13, and is passed through a cooler 15 through fixed coiled tubes in the upper drum 2, through a heater 20, and is returned by a pipe 22 to the coils 10 in the lower drum. The circulating gas from the coolest part of the condenser is thus brought into contact with the liquid in the coolest part of the evaporator. Atmospheric or higher pressures may be maintained in the apparatus. The upper drum may be divided by partitions 35 so as to collect different condensates. The directions of the gas and liquids may be reversed, the apparatus 18 being then used as a heater and apparatus 20 as a cooler. The volatile vapours given off by wines &c. may be used as a gaseous medium.

Nov. 26, 1917 Differential gearing.-In an epicyclic differential gear for motor-vehicles, the teeth of the bevel wheels and the planet pinions are helical and the spindles of the planet pinions run at each end in conical bearings which act as brake surfaces to retard the differential movement if one road wheel tends to slip on a greasy surface. The helical teeth of the pinions 8 introduce a wedging action thrusting the pinions radially outwards against the conical bearings 12 if a wheel slips during forward driving, or against the inner bearings 11 with reverse driving. The outer bearings 12 are adjustable and locking-means are provided for both bearings 11, 12.

Extracts.-In a process for mashing, applicable generally to making extracts from solid materials, malt and raw grain are fed with water into an airtight, steam-jacketed mash-tun. The materials are boiled under reduced pressure at a temperature at which the saccharifying action of the diastase is most active. Malt pulverized or ground with rice, corn, grits, &c., is introduced into the tun 1 through an inlet 8 along with water from a pipe 9. Steam is admitted to the jacket 2 and air exhausted from the tun by a pump 15 until the liquid boils at the required temperature (148‹-152‹ F.). The vapours pass into a condenser 16, and the condensed liquid is returned to the tun by a pipe 17. When the extraction and conversion are complete, water is pumped through a pipe 4 at the base of the tun, and rising through the perforated bottom 5 forces the wort through a filter 10 extending across the interior of the tun.

Air, drawing-off, methods of; forced ventilation; shafts.-In a system for ventilating refrigerators, breweries, &c., air is drawn off by pipes into chambers, where it forms a protective layer before leaving the building. The air passes through adjustable outlets 12 into the pipe 11, through pipes 14, 15, and a pressure regulator 16 into an exhauster 17, and thence by a pipe 18 into an air space 19 atove the ceiling 20. It then passes through an outlet 23 into the chamber 22, and finally leaves the building through an opening 24. The air may pass directly from the pipe 18 into the chamber 22 by an outlet 25.

A machine for blocking hats, having the edge of the brim turned inwards, comprises an adjustably fixed heated female die 5 and a co-operating male member 30 fixed to the top of a screwed post 23. The post 23 extends from a base 22 attached to a table 11 which is raised by a treadle acting through a lever system 13 and is locked by a device 14. A male die member 27 slides on the post 23 with a pin 28 engaging a slot 24 and is raised by a screwed boss 25 actuated by a handwheel 26. In use a hat body is placed over the member 30 and its edge secured by a string round a groove 29. The post 23 is raised by depressing a treadle to cause the die 30 to engage the die 5 to block the crown of the hat, in which position it is locked by the device 14 and the die member 27 is then raised by the handwheel 26 to complete the blocking of the hat brim. Modified means of raising the die 27 is by a collar freely slidable on the post which is actuated by a manuallyoperable force-multiplying lever system including for example a toggle or other form of lever. According to the Provisional Specification a machine for turning in the hat brim need not include male and female dies for blocking the hat crown. In addition the activation of the brim turning means may be by a ratchet and rack teeth. Specification 677,445 is referred to.
