[Class 102(i)] A diaphragm pump comprises a diaphragm 16 and valve plate 48 secured between flanges 12, 13 on the two parts of the casing. The upper part 11 of the casing has an inner chamber 44 comprising an inlet chamber and is fitted with a filter 76 and a flared outlet 70 which receives a seal 71 on a projection 52 of the valve plate. The projection 52 is fitted with the pump inlet valve 55 and an annular valve 64 controls flow through a ring of slots in the plate 48 to the outlet chamber 43. The delivery stroke of the diaphragm is effected by the spring 24 and the suction stroke by the lever 30 engaging a slot 28 in the rod 20.

Flexible-chamber pumps; actuating by electromagnets; strainers. - An electromagnet and its switching means are mounted above the pumping element which it actuates and the inlet and outlet connections of the pump. A bellows pump 21 is secured to a valve body 10 having a valved inlet 14, and a valved outlet through a pipe 51 to a glass &c. sediment vessel 12 and from the interior of a filter 48 therein to the discharge nipple 15. An electromagnet 11 operating the pump is carried by a shell 58 from the top of the valve body. The liquid in the inlet passage 14 and in the vessel 12 is under the pressure of gas entrapped in spaces 56, 57, steadying and silencing the flow. The armature disc 64 is secured to the bellows top, and is formed with a bead 65 cushioned by a body of cork, leather, &c. 66. Its rod passes freely through the coil and is passed downwards by a leaf spring 73 forming a guide for its upper end. The spring is supported from the top of the shell 60, which also carries a slotted breaker arm 79 surrounding the rod 67 between collars on it, and carrying contacts cooperating with contacts on a spring arm 106 engaging the lower collar. A leaf spring 108 engages the breaker arm 79 frictionally. A resistance 95 prevents arcing at the break.
