    • In a recorder/reproducer apparatus, a scanning magnetic transducer for the magnetic recording and reproducing of a data signal in a magnetic storage medium. The transducer includes one or more elongate main pole segments embedded in the periphery of a rotary drum and oriented at an angle relative to the drum's axis of rotation. An elongate stationary pole with an electromagnetic winding coupled to the data signal is spaced from the drum and oriented generally parallel to the axis of rotation. A magnetic tape is transported between the two poles in contact with the main pole segments on the drum and spaced from the stationary pole. Rotation of the drum during recording and/or playback causes the area of intersection, that is, the opposed common area or confronting face portions, of the stationary pole and each of the successive main pole segments to be moved or scanned along the face of the stationary pole. A concentrated magnetic field corresponding to the data signal is generated at the area of intersection and thus also is moved along the length of the stationary pole. As a result, a series of generally transverse tracks of magnetic states are recorded in, or reproduced from, the tape as it is moved between the main pole segments and the stationary pole. Plural stationary poles may be used to provide a multiple track magnetic transducer for recording and reproducing multiple tracks in the magnetic storage medium.

    • A magnetic transducer for reproducing/recording high frequency signals with a magnetic tape medium includes a pair of opposed transducer head halves separated by an insulation gap and bonded together to form a Y-shaped pole structure, each half including a laminated at least partially ferromagnetic core portion bounded on opposite surfaces with conductive layers, each of which forms a winding coil portion. Each core section is formed as one-half of a Y-shaped cross-sectional configuration having a leg portion and an angularly disposed arm portion, the distal end of which is capped with a block-shaped ferromagnetic pole tip in magnetic path relation therewith, the two pole tips lying in a common plane transverse to the plane of the gap. The conductive layers on the outer and inner surfaces of the laminated core section form outer and inner conductors which, when conductively interconnected, such as by jumpers, are configured to form a one or two turn coil for the transducer. The inner conductor is of an inverted generally U-shaped configuration with the bight portion of the two inner conductors passing through, and substantially filling, the openings of the Y-shape on opposite sides of the insulation gap layer beneath the pole pieces.The method of fabricating the magnetic transducer generally comprises the steps of forming at least two generally identical transducer head halves, each having generally one half of a Y-shape, commencing with providing a substrate having a surface shaped to define the core configuration and having a band shaped to define the pole configurations; applying a conductive layer to the surface for providing an outer coil conductor; alternately applying laminae of insulating and magnetic material to form a laminated core section; applying a conductive layer over an insulation layer about the face and side edges of the laminated core section for providing an inner generally U-shaped coil conductor; forming, in the band, a pole piece of magnetic material at the distal end of the arm of the core section; bonding two such transducer head halves in facing relation to from a Y-shaped transducer with the bonding material being insulating and forming the gap between the two pole pieces.

    • A transducer core having a magnetic core defining a non-magnetic gap and being integrally joined with a superposed composite body. The composite body has a nonmagnetic front portion spanning the nonmagnetic gap and a contiguous magnetic back portion. The superposed core and body are provided with overlapping grooves forming a window adapted to receive transducer windings.A method of manufacturing a magnetic transducer is provided wherein two complementary blocks of magnetic material are bonded together to define a nonmagnetic gap therebetween. A confronting surface of one of the blocks is grooved prior to bonding. The resulting magnetic block is sliced into a plurality of magnetic cores. A second magnetic block is provided with a longitudinal groove along one side thereof which side is bonded to a nonmagnetic block. The resulting composite block is sliced into a plurality of composite bodies, each comprising a nonmagnetic front portion and a magnetic back portion. Each magnetic core is superposed with a composite body and bonded thereto with the nonmagnetic gap spanned by the nonmagnetic front portion and with the respective grooves overlapping. The exposed planar surface of the superposed magnetic core is lapped until its width is reduced to a desired track width.
